Inspiring ... Educational ... Energizing
It
was everything a great convention should be!
We
hope you returned from the California State PTA Convention full of ideas,
motivation, and enthusiasm for the important work our organization does.
Don't
keep it to yourself! Share the information you received with
others in your PTA.
Here
are some ways to do that:
- Talk about what you learned at convention during PTA board meetings and
association meetings.
- Prepare written reports to share with your PTA members, either as
handouts or as newsletter articles.
- Make copies of the materials you received at convention and share them
with your PTA board and other members.
- You probably learned a lot about PTA practices at convention workshops.
If you find that your unit has not been following correct procedures, present
the information to your board and request that changes be made.

Review
and Prepare
The end of the school year
is approaching. This is a good time to review the past year and prepare for the
next.
- Ask your PTA leaders and members for feedback. What worked well and what
didn't? What suggestions do they have for next year?
- Convene your budget committee for the upcoming term. This committee
is appointed by the president-elect and chaired by the treasurer-elect.
Check your standing rules and the Toolkit to see who else should be
included.
- Based on the feedback
you received, decide which programs your PTA will provide next year and
determine how many fundraisers you will need to fund those
programs. Remember PTA's 3-to-1 Rule: Provide three programs
for every one fundraiser.
- Prepare
a budget and present it to the executive board-elect for input. The
board-elect then recommends the budget for adoption at the last
association meeting of the year.
- At this
association meeting, a motion must be passed to authorize the payment of
any bills that become due before the start of the new PTA year.
- Without
a budget adopted this way, the PTA cannot spend any funds over the summer
until a budget is adopted at the first association meeting of the year.
- Keep
in mind that this year's PTA may not encumber next year's PTA with financial
responsibilities. When the next year begins, allow the association to again
review and approve the budget.
