Tips to Highligh
t the Good Work of Your PTA

A brand-new year is beginning, and it's time to dive back into PTA activities with renewed energy!

Here are some ideas to keep your PTA in the spotlight and attract more participation:
  • At your school's upcoming events, set up a PTA table where families and community members can learn more about PTA and join.
  • Encourage all board members to be welcoming, to mingle, and to introduce themselves to everyone they meet at PTA and school events.
  • Make personal phone calls to the families that have not yet joined. Let them know that PTA continues to work hard to help their students be successful in school.
  • Recruit members who speak the different languages of your community to make personal phone-call invitations to families that are not fluent in English.
  • Use the PTA or school newsletter, e-mail, website or marquee to publicize PTA activities.
  • Translate all messages and invitations into the languages of your community.
  • Join PTAs across the country in connecting parents to their children's school experiences. Be part of Take Your Family to School Week, February 8-14, 2009.
  • Visit California State PTA's website for membership information and articles that can help you in your recruitment and outreach efforts.

Other midyear reminders:

  • If your PTA year began on July 1, your midyear audit should be done during the month of January. (Check your bylaws for your PTA's audit schedule.)
  • Check your bylaws for the timing of your officer elections and schedule a date to elect your nominating committee. PTA bylaws state that the nominating committee must be elected at an association meeting at least two months prior to the annual election meeting.
  • The California State PTA Convention will be held April 30 to May 3 in San Jose. Check the California State PTA Toolkit, Section 2.8.1b, for the number of delegates that your unit may send to convention. Schedule the election of delegates at an upcoming association meeting and make sure your budget includes the cost of registration, meals, and airfare (if necessary) for your convention delegates.
