LEADERSHIP Philadelphia Newsletter                     December 2010
 Dear ,

This month we intentionally warmed up the curriculum by adding an exercise that we normally do during the last week of class. Each person gets five minutes of undivided attention and positive feedback from his or her teammates. The impact on each person is powerful, touching, and humbling.

Think about it - how often do you get (or give) specific positive feedback from people who you respect and care about? Here are a few remarks from class members who felt seen and empowered by the exercise:

"Someone said that the best way to improve relationships with others is to improve the relationship with yourself. But I wonder if the opposite is true - the best way to improve relationships with others is to focus on others and stop thinking about yourself."

"The praise was humbling and unexpected. Details I would not have thought were observed were seen and remembered. There was a whole new level of closeness among us."

"[This exercise] pushed limits in a good way. I truly feel like I know my Junto on a deeper level. I feel motivated to stop thinking about what I'm going to do and start taking some action."

"I really thought this would be too much - but oh! was I wrong. I was thinking on my way in today that I didn't have enough "connection" to our group yet. But today I got it. Also since our group feels more connected and closer and there is more depth to our shared purpose I feel much safer here."

I am sharing this to suggest that you consider doing the exercise at home or at work. I've done it with my children during the holidays for several years. You simply sit around a table at home or at a restaurant and respond to the following questions about each person (5 minutes per person - positive comments only).

1. I noticed the following (good thing) about you:_________
2. I was impressed when you ___________.
3. I learned the following from you __________________.
4. When I think of you, I smile because _____________.

I cannot imagine a better investment of time as you wrap up this year. Please take this idea and...
Pay it Forward!

Favor Bank

Last year, LEADERSHIP introduced "The Favor Bank" to our classes.

The Favor Bank is a tool for forging connections and sharing resources. Everyone is invited to write down their name and need(s) - whether for work, community, or family - and place it in the Favor Bank. Each month during class all new requests are read to the entire group with the hope that someone might be able to fill them. You'd be amazed at the needs that have been filled- from securing a donation of over 70 computers for a local school to obtaining tickets for President Obama's inauguration! The following favors still need to be filled; if you can help, please send a note to news@leadershipphiladelphia.org (you're also welcome to submit favors of your own!).

  1. Amy Kurland, '11, has a beautiful house for sale in Rose Valley, which is in the Swarthmore, Media area.  Her family lived there for 14 years, until they moved into the city for her job.  The house is 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, on a private partially wooded lot and has really good karma.  It's on the Long and Foster website - 2 Tulip Lane.
  2. Dawn Karlyn, '11, is looking for any sports equipment that can be donated to Morrison Elementary. Her son is starting after-school programs and is especially interested in soccer and baseball equipment.
  3. Susanne D'Eustachio, '11, is interested in networking with anyone who has experience in enhancing the effectiveness and business alignment of Employee Networking Groups (ENGs) within a corporation.
