| LEADERSHIP Philadelphia Newsletter October 2010 |
Greetings!
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of attending a meeting led by Donna Frisby-Greenwood '02 to preview the Knight Foundation's "Soul of the Community" study [www.soulofthecommunity.org]. It focuses on community attachment and why that matters. Attachment is driven by Social Offerings (places for people to meet each other and feeling like people in the community care about each other); Openness (how welcoming the community is to different types of people); and Aesthetics (physical beauty and availability of green spaces).
As I listened, it occurred to me that we are teaching "attachment" at LEADERSHIP. We show you the passionate social entrepreneurs who work so hard to serve the City and you respond by raising a hand to help. We teach "openness" by helping you to get to know your classmates who represent different threads in the fabric of this community. Through your team interactions you are reminded what it means to open up to new friendships.
I raise the point about caring because in this meeting, a couple of people mentioned that Philadelphians tend to stay within the circle of their high school friends. I am not sure how different that is from other cities, but it's something I am thinking about. Core students often remark on the incredible chemistry that develops in their teams. Yes, I spend a great deal of time putting the teams together, but I must say that I think the chemistry has more to do with truly seeing one anothers' humanity. I have a feeling that if I just put you together randomly, the nature of the conversations themselves could cause that level of friendship and attachment. If so, maybe if the whole City were to go through LEADERSHIP, caring would increase.
So that's what I'm pondering this week. How about you?
Fondly,
Liz Dow
P.S. Happy Thanksgiving! |
