Greetings! ,
Legacy, Legacy, Legacy... It's a concept that we imprint in Core class members, forevermore condemning you to lead your lives a bit more purposefully. Well, this summer I had the opportunity to stare legacy in the face as I prepared my father's eulogy. I spent hours thinking about the purpose of this generous, loving, optimistic, enchanting, charming man. My assignment was to capture his essence succinctly. What I learned from this is that his 37 year tenure as an executive in jobs that he loved got two sentences. What I needed to communicate - what he leaves behind - was about the smile on the face of anyone who hears his name. He had a quick wit and a deep commitment to lifting the spirits of anyone he met. From the passenger in the carpool en route to school to the audience of the company's annual meeting that he chaired to the lonely person he chose to sit next to in a restaurant, his energy lifted the spirits of those around him. He mattered because throughout his 92 years, if just for a moment, he improved the quality of the day for those he came in contact with. And in my mind, that's leadership. And his legacy. I will end this note with a suggestion about legacy. The one thing I panicked about when my dad died is the thought of never hearing his voice again. Then my brother reminded me about the videotape we had made a few years earlier. We spent an hour prompting him to tell his favorite stories and now I can hear his beloved laugh and those heartwarming stories whenever I need them. This year we will add the creation of legacy DVD's to the Core curriculum. There are many ways to capture a legacy. I chose to share this one approach in order to encourage you to think about taping your parents, spouse, siblings, children, or yourself as part of honoring legacy. The idea of doing something like this used to be an intriguing notion to me. Now that DVD is the first thing I would carry out in case of a fire...
Meanwhile, since fall is to the educator what spring is to the farmer - a fresh start - I wish you a fresh start and the opportunity to reflect on whatever that means to you before the season changes.

Dear Fellows, "What is a personal calling? Whenever we do something that fills us with enthusiasm, we are following our legend. However, we don't all have the courage to confront our own dream..." - Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist (Introduction) LEADERSHIP instills the confidence to find and to follow what Coelho calls our "legend" - our personal calling; our passion. I'm not sure what I did to deserve the privilege of working with the group at LEADERSHIP and its extended family, but the experience has been transformational. Spending my days contemplating passions, legacy, and living purposefully has undoubtedly refocused the lens through which I see the world and my place within it. Much, I imagine, I hope, as it has for you. Thanks to LEADERSHIP I've seen fulfillment in so many forms - from Anne Mahlum (Connector) at Back on my Feet to Jay Madara '09 who now serves as Board Chair of his children's school to Sozi Tulante '07 who attends each World Cup because it's the one time the world is joyously united. I believe that my time at LEADERSHIP has given me the confidence to "confront my passion" and to run with it. This journey now leads me to the steps of Vanderbilt for my M.Ed. in International Education Policy & Management (NGO's, universities, nonprofits, etc). I start classes this fall and while I'm certainly sorry to leave LEADERSHIP, I am excited about the doors that might soon open. As I make my exit, I hope you will welcome the newest member of the LEADERSHIP family, Taylor Goodman. Originally from Ohio and a graduate of Haverford College, she most recently completed the prestigious Philly Fellows program. Taylor will serve as the new Placement & Development Coordinator and I know you will enjoy working with her. Thank you for your support and for sharing so much of yourselves with LEADERSHIP. It is my privilege to be a part of this family. Colleen Colleen.hoy22@gmail.com Colleen.m.hoy@vanderbilt.edu |
