Greetings! ,
On Monday I had the pleasure of hearing Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools, speak about building schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. He talked about how educating women, a rarity in that rural region, builds community. His efforts have resulted in the creation of 131 schools to date.
When I listen to a speech, I focus on the story of the speaker as well as the material presented. I am wondering: Why this topic? What moved this person to take action? I am far more engaged when I can follow how barriers were overcome, character was built, a dream was born, and action was taken to make the world a better place.
Mortenson's story makes his accomplishments so much more fascinating and vivid. Born in Minnesota, he spent 15 years in Tanzania, where his father established a hospital and insisted that Africans run it. Mortenson attended an international school there, surrounded by peers from across the world, and learned to respect differences and to find common ground. After graduating from college, he enlisted in the military where he worked with another diverse group of people. After nearly summiting K2 in tribute to the sister he had recently lost, Mortenson found himself alone so retreated to a village where he was nursed to health by Balti villagers. Out of gratitude he promised a young girl that he would return to build a school. That promise has resulted not only in the education of thousands of children, but also in the US military's requirement that senior officers read his book as a lesson in the power of listening and respect for other cultures.
I ask you to think about the twists and turns in your life story. Mortenson quoted Judith Campbell, "When your heart speaks, take good notes". What has happened to you along the way that tugged on your heartstrings? Pay attention to events large or small that speak to you. Your life is a story that can be all about your work and family. Or it could be more. At LEADERSHIP we ask you to find your passion to step up and take action. If Greg Mortenson can build 131 schools and write two best-sellers, what can you do? Why not start today?
Fondly,
Liz Dow

World Class is a multi-year endeavor facilitated by the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia that draws upon cross-sector leadership to position the region on a path to being a world class place to live, work, and play by 2026 - the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Your participation in an upcoming World Class Roundtable will help ensure the broad base of viewpoints necessary for this initiative's success. Roundtables are fast-moving, interactive sessions in which you will have the opportunity to sit down with a diverse group of regional business, nonprofit, government, and community leaders and discuss what's important for Greater Philadelphia's future.
