Greetings!
We recently held a series of alumni focus groups. Several people raised the issue that the term "alumni" seemed too passive or past-tense to describe LEADERSHIP's graduates. The commitment demonstrated and transformation achieved in class merits a term with more gravitas. We are, therefore, changing the term for our graduates to LEADERSHIP Philadelphia Fellows. This connotes membership to a fellowship of similarly trained and committed professionals. We'll use this term going forward and suggest that you change it on your resume as well. Meanwhile, we are completing Core interviews this week and are very excited about the accomplishments and diversity of the incoming class. From the City's Chief Integrity Officer to the Police Department's Head of Homeland Security for Philadelphia, the leaders of the Broad Street Ministry and Career Wardrobe, plus many more committed corporate professionals, class will be outstanding once again. We'll forward their names next month so that you can welcome them into the fellowship. We are pleased to announce that our extraordinary intern, Colleen Hoy, has agreed to stay on for another year to handle social network development, Fellows affairs, and placement, and to assist with development. Elaine Mercier who helped us tremendously in the areas of event management, fellowship, and development, is pursuing other interests at this time. We hope that you have made space in your summer to reflect on your accomplishments and gifts of the past year, and to think about what you can do to continue your legacy in the coming year.
Fondly,
Liz Dow
President
PS. We're gathering your stories for the 50th Anniversary...see below |

If you are willing to publicly share your experience, please answer the questions below and send via email to Colleen. Breakfast With A Bestseller....Dan Gediman
On June 11th over 200 LEADERSHIP Philadelphia Core members and Fellows arrived at Lincoln Financial Field to learn more about the national This I Believe project. Dan Gediman, Executive Director of This I Believe Inc., resurrected the project and has brought new life to the national program through educational programs, NPR airings, and publishing two editions of essay collections so far. The program, which originated in Philadelphia in the 1950's, has been adopted by LEADERSHIP Philadelphia as a cornerstone of its 50th Anniversary Celebration. Select fellows have participated by writing short essays on their personal beliefs, which have been featured in the Philadelphia Business Journal and on WHYY. The project has also found a partner in Mural Arts, which, to celebrate its own 25th Anniversary, has joined hands with this year's Core Class to create the first-ever City-Wide Mural, "This We Believe" which will be painted throughout the city this summer.
Dan gave a captivating history of the program and where the organization hopes to take it in coming years. With audio clips from famous past Philadelphians, a true connection between the city and the project, newly rejuvenated, was evident. To learn more please visit This I Believe online and WHYY's audio recordings of LEADERSHIP Philadelphia Fellows.
Thank you to everyone who came to our second successful "Breakfast With A Bestseller" event. And a special thank you to our Sponsors and Partners:
Sponsors: PricewaterhouseCoopers, Lynn Yeakel, Leslie Anne Miller, Esq. LLC, Nason Construction, PECO Energy, SCA Americas, and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
Partners: The Mann Center, MuralArts Program, and WHYY |
Congratulations to our
Core Class of 2009 Fellows! On June 11, 2009 110 individuals became LEADERSHIP Philadelphia Fellows. Liz described this class as the most "generous, appreciative, and diverse". Many thanks to this year's class for an energizing and productive year. Their hard work made this a record-breaking schoalrship drive, which will greatly enhance next year's Core Class experience.
We look forward to seeing the paths you will take and hope that you will each stay in touch. LEADERSHIP has an extensive and vibrant base of fellows that can serve as a springboard for greater connectivity and mobility in the region - we hope you will take advantage of it! |

Pay It Forward with Core 2009 Junto 11 Junto 11 created their own Pay it Forward project this year - working with Philadelphia's Achieving Independence Center (AIC). AIC supports young people in out-of-home (foster) care who have reached an age when they must transition to living independently. Junto members supported the AIC's first Annual Gala and created a career exploration field day for several youth involved in AIC.
On May 19th Junto members and 11 youth met with the CEO and staff of Janney, Montgomery & Scott, where they had a tour of the trading floor and time to share goals. Next stop on the trip: Saul Ewing where Junto members shared their experiences as attorneys. Mayor Michael Nutter then met with the group in City Hall for an hour, during which time the youth were able to question the Mayor about issues that concerned them. Fire Commissioner Lloyd Anders then met with the youth in the Fire Administration Building and spoke about career opportunities in the Fire Department in Philadelphia. The group also toured the 911 call center and Emergency Operations Center, and were treated to a trip on the fire boat from the Coast Guard Station. The day concluded at the AIC offices where students were given care packages provided by Johnson & Johnson and PECO.
Junto 11 on their experience: "Throughout the day with the AIC youth, we were able to see how many opportunities there are to connect with youth on personal and professional levels, as well as share some of our knowledge and life/work experiences to help motivate, encourage, and inspire a deserving youth. Many of the students had some academic or career aspirations, and as a result exploring the locations we visited, they expressed interest in following up to learn more information about a particular career, or explore opportunities for summer internships... Overall, members of Junto 11 learned that we can offer youth parts of our time, talent, and treasure by being hands on and being transparent about who we are and how we've accomplished what we did. We also walked away realizing how rich and varied our own lives - for some of the youth, it was the first time they had been on a boat or seen the city from a top floor of a building, much less had a private audience with the Mayor... One young man summed it up for all of us when he said to the Mayor, 'I will remember this day for the rest of my life.'" |
