liz Greetings!

We are about to embark on a strategic planning process. In a related discussion, a board member asked me, "Why are we here?" I responded with our mission language: "to mobilize and connect." We are also here to cause conversations about what is right about Philadelphia. We're here to open eyes and to open doors.

While our mission remains unchanged, we could use a good tagline. We welcome your suggestions. If you think of a sentence that sums up your experience with us, please send it in. Meanwhile we simply ask that you continue to Pay It Forward.

Fondly,
Liz Dow, President

PS. We are still accepting Core applications (contact Angela)

Paying It Forward (Story submitted by an alumna)
I was walking back from a meeting in Center City Philadelphia when I noticed a ring of keys on the sidewalk next to the bus stop at 21st and Locust. I bent over to pick them up and then thought to myself, "Oh here you go AGAIN trying to do a good thing and you know that people will tell you what a waste of time this will be." I put the keys back down and told myself to be just like everybody else, let it go, don't interfere, don't get involved. Well that lasted all of 3 seconds. I started to walk away but I could not leave them there.

There were several of those plastic tags that are "club cards" for the supermarket, pharmacy, etc. but I could not get a live person to help me on any of those. I then saw a tag from a pre-paid legal company in case one gets arrested. My first thought was, "OH GREAT! Now look what you have gotten yourself into." Again, I could not help myself, and I called the pre-paid legal company, who in turn got in touch with the owner of the keys while I stayed on hold. We made arrangements for me to leave the keys for someone named Darnell at a nearby coffee shop. I stopped by later in the after-noon to see if Darnell had picked up the keys. They had not been picked up, and again, I tried to think like everyone else and just remind myself that when you do a good deed, all that will happen is that someone will scam you. I never think that way but so many people around me do that I was starting to believe that maybe they are right and I am wrong.

This morning I stopped at the coffee shop, and lo and behold Darnell came by to pick up her keys while I was at the counter drinking my coffee. I told her that I was the one who had found the keys. She clearly was not very well off financially, and yet she tried to give me $10, which I told her to donate to charity. She told me that the day before, when I had found her keys, an amazing thing had happened.

Earlier that morning she had found a cell phone. She back dialed off the call log and arranged to return to phone to a 72-year-old woman. Just after she had returned the phone to the 72-year-old woman, Darnell got a call from the pre-paid legal company telling her that someone had found her keys and was trying to return them to her. So that morning, Darnell did a random act of kindness by returning a phone and then a random act of kindness was done for Darnell when someone tracked her down to return her keys.
