Players Tee Off at Gentle Creek
More than 100 golfers gathered for the June 2 CASAs for Kids Classic Golf Tournament at Gentle Creek Golf Club in Prosper. A hot, sunny day with just the right amount of breeze was perfect for the players, who competed in putting and longest drive contests.
A bagpiper signaled the shot gun start as golfers competed for prizes, awarded at a dinner following the event. Joe Trahan, WFAA-TV Channel 8, played with the group and served as master of ceremonies.
CASA volunteers generously donated their time to help run the annual event.
Competitors were complimentary about the beautiful course, which they said was perfect for tournament play. |
| New Volunteers Take Oath
CASA welcomed 17 new advocates with a swearing-in ceremony June 4 at the Collin County Courthouse. The 16 women and one man completed 30 hours of training and learned the rules of the court from Judge Curt Henderson before taking their CASA oath. Classes for volunteers begin every three months. |

CASA Director Serves on Quality of Life Panel
CASA Executive Director Susan Etheridge has been serving on the advisory board of "Beyond ABC: Growing Up in Collin County," assessing the quality of life for county children ages newborn to 17. The group announced its findings last week in a report citing both good news and community concerns. The 44 page publication was compiled by experts in the fields of health, juvenile justice, mental health, school districts, substance abuse and a variety of social services and is based on 61 indicators.
Results have led to the formation of a committee which will work to correct the deficits, including increases in infant mortality rates, numbers of children with asthma, violent crimes and child abuse and neglect. Also cited were economic difficulties in the county for more than 11,000 children, despite the fact that Collin County has the highest median income and lowest child poverty rate in Texas.
A complete copy of the report is available at http://www.childrens.com/aboutus/childadvocacy/BeyondABC.cfm

| Slagles Selected as June Volunteers
Few CASA volunteers have led as interesting lives as Pete and June Slagle. Veterans of the TV and film industry, they retired to McKinney and began representing children for CASA 14 months ago. Working as a couple, they have closed 3 cases successfully in a short period of time, and have accepted a fourth.
"It is always emotional," said June, speaking of her relationships with those they have represented, "and sometimes heartbreaking."
Their outcomes, however, have ensured bright futures for the children they serve.
In addition to serving as advocates, the Slagles are the "official" photographers for the CASA golf tournament, taking photos of participating teams.
