Welcome to Rutiz Farms HAPPENINGS ON THE FARM .
Our strawberries are winding down for the season....we will continue to have them for sale on the stand table for a few more weeks, but we are finished with the u-pick. Our raspberries are coming on slowly...we'll have ample supplies on the table for this week, but still not enough to open the field for u-pick....maybe in another week or so. Our blackberries are sweet and juicy...we should have plenty for the table for this week. The corn still looks like another 10 days off. Our tomatoes are just starting to come in...plenty in another 10 days.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX THIS WEEK This week's "heirloom" tomatoes come from Tutti Frutti Farms. They are located just east of Lompoc and all of their produce is certified organic. The "fingerling" potatoes are great for steaming or roasting whole...my favorite is: --scrub the dirt off the skin---no need to peel the potatoes ( the skins have much of the vitamins of the potato) --place in a bowl and sprinkle with olive oil and seasonings --place on a cookie sheet or roasting pan, single layer --roast in the oven at 425 degrees for about 35 minutes or until the insides are soft. The apricots are from Mike Cirone of See Canyon. They are at their peak, sweet and juicy. His trees are "dry-land" farmed and grown using only winter- time dormant sprays, used to keep diseases away. The Persian cucumbers are from our own farm this week...no bitter skins, no need to peel...just be sure to eat them within a few days. Their thin skins make them especially crunchy, but they don't hold up in the refrigerator as long as a typical "waxed" thick skinned cucumber.
