Stop Procrastinating!

Procrastination is a self-defeating behavior that develops in part due to low self-esteem and fear of failure.

Overcoming procrastination is the first step in helping you create the lifestyle you desire.

You must change the habits and behaviors that led you to procrastinate in the first place. Instead of focusing on the difficulty of a large task, break it into smaller jobs and create a timeline for finishing them.

Several small jobs done over time are much more manageable that one large task with no end in sight.

You'll be astonished at how much you can get done if you concentrate on one thing at a time instead of cluttering your mind with multiple tasks.

Try tackling the more undesirable tasks early in the day so that by afternoon you can pursue more pleasant activities.

If people or outside forces distract you, use the power of the human mind to block out what impedes your progress and concentrate solely on the task at hand.

Results or Excuses?

In Dr. Wayne Dyer's latest book, Excuses Begone, he states the biggest mistake people make is allowing themselves to use excuses for not doing things we are capable of doing. Most of us are guilty of not doing something we should have. When we are questioned about our lack of results, do we accept responsibility and admit we are at fault?

Usually not. Instead we make excuses.

Excuses negate responsibility, and it is responsibility that separates man from the rest of the animal kingdom. Unlike other animals, we are responsible not for what we have, but for what we could have; not for what we are, but for what we could become. If we are to take credit for our successes, we must assume responsibility for our failures. Trying to hide our failures with excuses is like concealing a small hole in our garment with a large patch; it only makes the matter worse.

Excuses are harmful because they prevent one from succeeding.

When we make excuses and repeat them often enough, they become a belief. The belief then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. For example, an agent discouraged by his poor sales starts to blame the sellers for his lack of productivity. "No one wants to buy my listings because they are all overpriced." he says. After repeatedly making this excuse, he begins to believe it is true. The result? Dismal production. Compare this with a responsible sales professional. After hearing many prospects complain about the high price, he accepts responsibility. "It is my fault they are not buying," the rep says, "it's my job to convince the seller to price it properly or remove it from the market." Once we accept responsibility, we can evaluate our actions and take corrective measures to find solutions to our problems. Excuses, on the other hand, are like stop signs; they halt our progress.

By refusing to make excuses and embracing responsibility, we reap many rewards. The successes brought by this attitude act as a foundation for self-respect, pride, and confidence. Responsibility breeds competence and power. By living up to our promises and obligations, we win the trust of others. Once we are seen as trustworthy, people will willingly work with us, for our mutual gain. So, you see, making excuses can put the brakes on our progress, while accepting responsibility can lead us to the top.

Here are 4 steps to stop making excuses and start building a successful life.

1. Realize that your success or failure depends on you.It depends on the choices you make. It depends on your attitude. Resolve to start accepting responsibility today. Don't find an excuse, find a way. Don't make excuses, make good.

2. Beware of rationalization. We make excuses to hide behavior we are ashamed of. Rationalization is the process of trying to hide shameful conduct from ourselves. This is dangerous because we become unaware of what we are doing.

3. From time to time, stop and examine your progress. Compare where you are now with where you would like to be. Ask yourself why is there a gap between these two points. Don't make excuses. Make plans and take corrective action.

4. When you make a mistake, accept responsibility; learn from it; and don't repeat it. Use your time for discovering solutions instead of inventing excuses.

"Results or excuses...The choice is up to YOU"!
Feeling Stressed Out?

Today, people tend to work longer hours, have their kids involved in more activities, and generally maintain a busier style of life than even a few years ago. This can be exciting and enriching, but it can also lead to a feeling of constant stress and chaos. If you're looking for ideas on how to simplify life, you're not alone. Here are some of the main ways you can reduce the stress of a life that's packed to the hilt while still maintaining the activities that are important to you.

Clear Clutter
Many stressed people live in cluttered homes and/or work in cluttered work spaces. Clutter is both an effect and a cause of stress. Clutter can bring a general feeling of uneasiness, and can literally drain your energy. Take 15 minutes each night to tackle one pile at a time, decluttering your office or house space by space. Another strategy is to take several hours one weekend a month and just be done with it. Either way, you'll remove a subtle but significant energy drain from your life.

Cut Out Negative Relationships
You may already be aware of the value of solid, supportive relationships in your life -- you may not be as aware of the effects of conflicted relationships -- the critical, unpredictable, or uber-competitive friend. It turns out that 'toxic friendships' actually drain us more than purely negative relationships. You can save yourself grief, frustration and drama if you take an honest look at the relationships in your life and decide which are worth maintaining and which should be let go.

Automate What You Can
Getting some of the daily, weekly and monthly work of your life into an automated system can help simplify life and relieve stress in two ways: You don't have to take time to do the work, and you don't have to clutter your mind by remembering to do the work. Making little changes that take steps out of your daily routine can be an easy way to simplify life.

Live Within Your Means
To say that money can't buy happiness is cliché. We all pretty much know this, and research has supported it as well. Many people who make large amounts of money simply spend more, and carry large amounts of debt, leading to feelings of stress rather than abundance. The key to avoiding this type of financial stress is simple, but not always easy: Live within your means. This can be a difficult change at first, but one that will bring great rewards, and can significantly lower your stress levels.

Learn To Say No
While many people spend as much money as they possibly can, leaving themselves feeling stretched to the limit, too many of us also budget our time this way. With demands from work, family and life in general, it's easy to become over scheduled these days. One way to find extra time is to get better at saying no to time demands that aren't serving you. After you trade some of your more taxing obligations with some more self-nurturing ones, you should see a lasting change in your stress level, and find yourself living a more simplified life.

There are many great stress relievers out there, but perhaps the most useful ways to relieve stress are the ones that help you explore the cause of stress that you're feeling so you can work through your feelings and perhaps prevent future stress.
