Oak Lawn Newsletter - Friday, Dec. 19

Greetings!

HAPPY HANUKKAH / MERRY CHRISTMAS

With the Holidays upon us, what better way to celebrate the season than offering some assistance to our Community.
Food Pantry Donations
Each December, the Food Pantry at Resource Center of Dallas experiences a dramatic increase in the demand for food and services due to the holiday season. Individual HIV/AIDS client numbers swell to over 1500 a week - each needing their basic food requirements. Every December, the Food Pantry at the Center also replenishes its shelves with the largest donations of food of the year.

After 23 years in the same location, the Food Pantry must close and move instead. On October 24, the Food Pantry was given notice by the landlord that it must vacate by December 31, 2008 - a devastating blow to both clients and the Center. Starting from a cardboard box at the corner of Cedar Springs and Throckmorton, the Food Pantry has been a mainstay since 1985 for those impacted by HIV and AIDS from its current location just behind its original birthplace.

We need your help. At a time when we should be focused on the care of our clients, we must instead move the pantry to a new location and spend our limited resources not on food, but on expenses associated with moving a small grocery store. Moving, renovation and replacement of equipment such as commercial refrigeration, check out counters, storage and shelving units is estimated to cost well over $25,000. This is in addition to our annual need for additional funds to cover the increased need for pantry items and the potential loss of generous holiday food donations due to the move.

Pet of the Week - Alex
Alex is a male, neutered Chihuahua about 7 years old. He is white and weighs in about 7 lbs. His reason for being in the shelter: found as a stray.

This little guy was found in East Texas. He is very sweet and lovable. He loves to be held and gets along great with cats. Alex has a dislocated hip and knee. He required surgery to repair both.

Alex has completed his surgery and is recovering well. We are still raising money to cover his surgery. Cost is about 1200.00. If you can help, please donate to our Angel Fund in his name. He should be ready for adoption December 24th.

If you can adopt Chris and give him a good home, please contact the DFW Humane Society at 972-253-3333, or check out one of the many other pets that need a home by visiting their web site.
