Two Men Arrested For
Oak Lawn Hate Crime

The Dallas Voice (and other news outlets) is reporting a possible hate crime that happened around Midnight on Wednesday, July 16 on Dickason Ave. to a male walking home after visiting Zini's Pizzeria. No victim identification was given.

The following news item was found on www.krld.com which identifies the victim:

Dallas Police have made two arrests in what they describe as a hate crime early yesterday in Oak Lawn.  Jimmy Lee Dean was beaten and robbed near Cedar Springs and Throckmorton by two men who shouted gay slurs at him during the attack.  Norman Draper found Dean lying in the street and says his face was really beat in and there was blood all over the road.
Police say the two suspects admit to robbing and beating Dean and that they did it because he was gay but they're apparently blaming each other for coming up with the idea.

>> Please be careful and be aware of your surroundings while out at night.

Uptown  Burglaries

wfaa.com is reporting: "While it appears the Uptown burglars are getting bolder, they have now moved onto another neighborhood.

Over a four-day period, the thieves broke into nine apartments. However, this time, Uptown residents weren't the only victims. Apartments on East Mockingbird were targeted.

Including the residents that were hit Wednesday, the total number of homes that have been robbed rose to nearly 30.
In one of the latest cases, a Dallas officer's home was the target. Criminals took the female officer's badge, gun and baton. The crime has police concerned the stolen items could be used by one of the criminals to pose as an officer."

At the Oak Lawn Crime Watch this past Wednesday, a DPD report was presented on the recent rash of burglaries in Central and Northwest...drilling very small holes in the doors directly above the deadbolt locks.  There apparently are several persons now committing these break-ins which are happening mostly at night but have also occurred during the day.  They are usually occurring when people are known to be gone for lengthy periods of time but not always.

It hasn't typically been happening to doorknob locks as opposed to deadbolts.  It can happen to inexpensive and expensive lock sets.  A sheath-like protective "wrap" above the lock should prevent the break-in. Central officers have met with several of the larger complexes in the Uptown area and additional security measures have been put in place.  It is extremely important for tenants and residents to start being more aware of what is going on around them.  All of these break-ins are happening when there are neighbors right next door and they are totally unaware of what is going on.

Thanks to Nancy Weinberger for the Crime Watch meeting report.
DTV Transition in 2009
DTV pal
TXA 21
Transition Test
Wednesday, July 23
7:00 - 9:00 pm

Do you know how the transition to DTV will work when it happens in February of 2009?

wfaa.com has anohter great article explaining what is going to happen. If you have cable, satellite or some other form of TV service, you will not be affected. But, if you only have an antenna, then you will need to buy a converter box for the switch-over. You can apply for a $40 coupon, and a great inexpensive box is already available from Dish Networks called the DTVpal.

You can read all about it on wfaa.com

Are you unsure if you will be affected?

On July 23 between 7 and 9 p.m., KTXA (Channel 21) engineers will switch off the station's analog transmitter for approximately 15 seconds.  During that time, only viewers whose televisions are equipped to receive a digital signal will be able to view the broadcast.

"This is the most reliable way to know if you are ready for digital TV," said KTXA Senior Vice President and Station Manager Gary Schneider. "If your set goes dark during that time, you will know that you still need to take action before Feb. 17."

Pet of the Week - Marley
Marley is a Male, neutered Boston Terrier, about 18 lbs. and about 7 years old. His color is Black and White.
Reason for Surrender: Found as stray.

"I came in as a stray, so the shelter is just a temporary place until you come to take me home. My ideal home is one where my family takes me everywhere-I love to ride in the car! I have tons of energy for a 7 year old, so I'd also like a yard so I can run to my heart's content. And one more thing: I want to be your only dog. That's not so much to ask, is it? I'm very energetic, sweet, and friendly, and once you meet me, you'll fall in love!"

If you can adopt Marley and give him a good home, please contact the DFW Humane Society at 972-253-3333, or check out one of the many other pets that need a home by visiting their web site.
