Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday
Memorial Day Weekend May 24 - 26, 2008
Are you looking to do some home or condo sprucing up this Memorial Day weekend? During Memorial Day weekend, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales and use taxes on purchases of certain energy efficient products. The 2008 Energy Star sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day). The products qualifying for the exemption are:
air conditioners priced under $6,000 (room and central units) clothes washers (but not clothes dryers*) ceiling fans dehumidifiers dishwashers light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent) programmable thermostats refrigerators priced under $2,000.
Qualifying products will display the Energy Star logo, which may appear on the appliance, the packaging or the Energy Guide label. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items one can purchase during this sales tax holiday, and an exemption certificate is not required.

Borders and Bridges Conference

Resource Center of Dallas hosts first gender identity conference in North Texas.
Borders & Bridges is a conference for exploring a deeper understanding of the gender/identity borders that separate and protect and how individuals can build bridges across those borders to be allies to one another. This conference seeks to support the many genders and identities within our community. Keynote Speaker, Jessica Eve Humphrey, is an organizer by day and a radical activist by night. The conference will also feature performer/activist/producer Kentucky Fried Woman a.k.a. Krista Smith, who performs and produces as a solo artist and with other San Francisco area gender-based performance artists. Borders & Bridges is hosted by J.E.W.E.L. (Joining & Educating Women & Empowering Leaders) a women's group dedicated to empowering women within their community through programs and educational and social opportunities. J.E.W.E.L. is a program of the Resource Center of Dallas.

Rev. John Gundlach, a retired Navy Chaplain of 27 years who now serves as Minister for Government Chaplaincies for the United Church of Christ, will be our special guest preacher Sunday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. In his work with the UCC, Rev. Gundlach ministers to the many men and women who are serving the U.S. military as chaplains, and to their spouses. Rev. Gundlach holds a degree in Religion and Philosophy from Catawba College, a Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary, and a Master of Arts in counseling from Pepperdine University.

Lone Star Ride
Kick Off Party Sunday, June 1
Even though the 2008 Lone Star Ride Fighting AIDS is three months away, the Dallas Kick Off Party will take place next Sunday at Salum Restaurant (4152 Cole Ave.). The event is 2:00 - 5:00 pm and musical entertainment will be provided by 'Lovie'. The Ride is scheduled for September 27-28 and benefits AIDS Outreach Center Tarrant County, AIDS Services of Dallas and Resource Center od Dallas. This is the 3rd year of MetroBall and is the primary fundraising event of GDMAF. Monies raised goes to support five North Texas HIV/AIDS agencies by providing monies for emergency needs. GDMAF will assist over 150 people and distribute over $50,000 in 2008. The event will include the aerial artistry of Neal Everett along with DJ "Frankie Ice".
Tickets: $20 advance, $25 door, available online and at Skivvies on Cedar Springs. VIP packages are available with exclusive access to private VIP room, reserved parking and light appetizers proved by Hector's on Henderson. Raffle Tickets are also available for $5 each or 3 for $10 with a chance to win a 37" HDTV Flatscreen TV.
