Ukraine/Yodis.org Update June 2008
|
Dear ,
What an event-filled month for both of us. While Beth was enjoying the Ukrainian Palm Sunday and Easter, Eric was busy promoting the ministry of the Church on the Shelter in snowy Colorado, arid Arizona and briefly in sunny California.
Response from the promotional tour has been encouraging. One Godly man I have known for many years sacrificed $1k and said, "Now all you need is 150 more people to do the same." We'll update the website when we have a better handle after we get a look at next months statements.
Aside from the financial response, I believe that God used this time to inspire hearts, challenge priorities, and perhaps even change lives. After our first presentation, a big, burly man came up to me with tears in his eyes, barely choking out the words, "I was an alcoholic for (x-number) of years, and I'll be praying for ______". At the last program of the tour, a man who was asked to offer the closing prayer, tried but couldn't because he was overcome emotionally. When real men are broken and unashamed, I figure the Lord is doing something mighty in their lives.
This was the first time I have done a promotional tour, but we are already looking toward a brief trip to California in the fall. In October, we will be on the west coast to honor Beth's parents for their 50th Anniversary and will take as much as three weeks following to promote the ministry. If your west coast church can allow us to play a significant role on their Sunday (either 30 minute minimum in a.m. worship, a combined Sunday Schools presentation, Sunday Evening service, or a combination of the above), then we would be glad to prepare a customized program to challenge your church body. We will also be scheduling weekday business lunches, evening dinner programs, and Saturday breakfasts. Now is not too early to begin preparing.

What Would I Do Without Them?
At this point I wanted to say a big Thanks to everyone who helped me during the three weeks I was away from Beth. You took on much of the responsibility that Beth normally handles. So here is a partial list: Thanks to Shirley Cook for finding my keys. Thanks to Laura Porterfield for doing my laundry. Thanks to Jan Edwards for bringing my dinner. Thanks to Cheryl Wilson for loaning me her car. Thanks to Linda (and Bill) Emery for sending me my own cell phone after I left it in Phoenix. Thanks to Betty Murray and others who staffed my promotional table and stuffed bulletins while I was greeting church folk. Thanks to everyone I should be saying thanks to but can't because the list would be way too long.

While Eric Was Gone, Someone Was Busy
While Eric was overseas, Beth used her extra time to get the yard in order. This included shoveling and wheelbarreling a lot of dirt, planting a lawn, leveling the raised planter beds, weeding, planting and replanting a lot of seeds, flowers and plants in the front yard and back yard. Most of this she did without telling me as she wanted to surprise me when I got back. She succeeded! Of course, God had a hand in this by providing a week and a half of rain after the grass was seeded. The setting up of the flamingoes, however, was all Beth's doing.
Of course all of her hard work paid off. This year our Forsithia provided an early splash of yellow across the front of the house, The Lilacs are stunning in their looks as well as their fragrance. Our hybrid peonies were spectacular. All this beauty in the springtime helps us recover from the winter blues that often are accentuated by a lack of sunshine. The second thing this beauty does is to keep us from missing the beautiful spring of Tennessee with its Dogwoods, Redbuds and Rododendrons.
So, now I have pictures of flowers, flower beds and of course, the lawn. However, I don't have pictures of Beth out there doing the work. We'll have to rectify that problem.

Vintage Guitar To Be Sold
Proceeds Go To Ministry
This 1975 Vintage Guitar is being sold by a fan of the ministry and the proceeds will go to help build the church on the shelter. It is often referred to as the Lawsuit Guitar, because Martin Guitar sued Takamine claiming this model was too similar to one of theirs in its use of material (Rosewood) and design. These are getting more difficult to find and the few remaining are getting snatched up.
If you or a collector you know is interested in this guitar, it's hard case and vintage strap, get in touch with Ellen at 408-504-7229 or by e-mail: Simply type esszeto and then type @yahoo.com

Praise, Prayer & News
Charity: It hardly seems possible that since we last wrote, Charity has turned 18 years old. Pray for her that she would finish her junior year well and for traveling safety as she joins us for the summer.
Beth: Had a good and productive time while Eric was away. She celebrated the Ukrainian Palm Sunday and Easter without Eric and was happy to celebrate Anniversary #22 when Eric returned. Pray for Beth as she balances life's demands and reaches out to others as well.
Eric: Though he is enjoying being back in Ukraine with Beth, the ministry currently demands that he wear a multitude of hats. Pray for wisdom and strength to function well in this multi-tasking environment. Mission Society, Spiritual Renewal of the Donbas: The mission is currently undertaking a restructure that will turn the reigns almost completely over to Ukrainian leadership. Pray for wisdom and courage to make radical changes that will benefit the ministry for the long term.Sergei Moroz: The director of the mission society has resigned to become the newly elected Senior Presbyter (Bishop) of the Baptist Union in the Lugansk province. Pray for him to have continued success in leadership and church planting through this area of 2.5 million people.
Church on the Shelter: Most of the document work is now done and we hope to finish the foundation before the end of summer. Currently we are looking for ways to move the church planter and his family to Donetsk by July 1. The door to door ministry continues as we follow up on contacts that were made earlier in the year. Pray for wisdom, courage, and open doors in all aspects of the ministry and construction.
Church Planters: Summer is a great time in Ukraine for outreach. Many church planters will be holding children's, youth and/or family camps. Pray for the church planters as they work tirelessly this summer to see eastern Ukraine saturated with new churches.
