Today I want to talk about the non-urgent and important.
Yesterday was Mother's Day, and it reminded me of the sacrifice our moms made in order to carry us, deliver us and raise us.
It wasn't easy for her, but it was important to her. Likely, having a child wasn't urgent, either. Having you and raising you was a pure act of love and self-sacrifice.
What else is not urgent, yet very important in your lives? Planning, maintaining our health (exercising and doctor visits), volunteering, spiritual/religious activities, and spending time with our loved ones - all these are non-urgent, yet they lay the groundwork for some of the most satisfying and memorable moments and accomplishments of our lives.
Non-urgent but important activities around your career can provide the same depth of accomplishment.
Just ask these questions of yourself on a daily basis, and do at least two each day.
1. Have you stopped to help someone today?
2. Have you taken the time to teach something to someone today?
3. Have you taken a half-hour to exercise, meditate or pray?
4. Have you taken the time to listen closely to what your loved ones are saying?
5. Have you cleaned up any "messes" that you inadvertently made in the past?
6. Have you planned your day, week, month and year?
7. Have you kept your workspace neat, clean and orderly?
8. Have you taken the time to really get to know someone new?
9. Have you done any volunteer work?
10. Have you reached out to someone who has needed some assistance?
