Your day is jammed from beginning to end, and you're trying to handle everything that crosses your desk. But you notice that some things are slipping through the cracks.
What's happening? Your day is running you, rather than the other way around.
One way you can help move things off your plate is by delegation. Why aren't you delegating as much as you should? Ask yourself these five questions:
1. Do I have an issue with trust that I can overcome?
2. Do I have opinions about myself or others that I can let go?
3. If I were sick or on vacation, who would have to do this for me?
4. Who could I begin to train and develop to take on some of my workload?
5. Am I overpromising what I can realistically get done?
Next time you have a thought that you're overworked or overwhelmed by what you have to do, stop for a moment and think: What tasks must I do, and which ones could be accomplished by others? First, delegate the easy ones. Then, set aside some time to teach others what they could do for you that would free up some of your time. (Hint: think of people whose strengths are in areas where you're weaker or who like to do the things you don't.)
Believe it or not, some people actually like to do paperwork!
Take advantage of your freed-up time to do what's really important: pursue and land more sales!
