Setting Powerful Goals: Step Three |
|
We're working on creating an Ultimate Motivating Force™ (UMF) that will empower your year, if not your entire career. The UMF is the answer to the questions, "What do you really, really want?" and "Why do you want it?"
Two weeks ago and last week, we said that a UMF needs to be:
- Desirable. Strong enough that you desire it with all your heart.
- Valuable. Something you value most and that has the most meaning for you.
- Positive. Stated positively (what you want, not what you don't want).
- Congruent. Completely aligned with your personal beliefs, values, ideals and strengths.
- Specific. Able to articulate it with language that pins down what you want.
- Measurable. Must be objective and quantifiable, taking place within a timeframe.
- Controllable. Must be able to control the outcome.
This week we add the last three:
Efficient. You should choose a way to achieve your results quickly and predictably. No sense in being inspired to do something if it's going to take an unnecessarily long time. I'm sure you'll agree that you want to see results quickly!
Synergistic. What you create should be a win-win. In other words, the whole should be greater than the sum of its parts. You can't manipulate others or do things that are out of integrity or (goes without saying) are dishonest. Pick something where both you and others can be empowered by.
Long-term. Choose something that will inspire you for a long, long time. You can always change the outcomes that provide the Ultimate Motivating Force, but it's better to choose something that will empower you for years to come.
Have a great week!

Next week, we're going to give you some specific examples of UMFs, and how they imspired and empowered the people who created them.
THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK: You're ready to finalize your Ultimate Motivating Force. Write it down and show it to those closest to you. Inspire them and get them behind you and your endeavors.
Please take a minute and let me know how you're doing out there. How have these tips been helping you? |
