We're working on creating an Ultimate Motivating Force™ (UMF) that will empower your year, if not your entire career. The UMF is the answer to the questions, "What do you really, really want?" and "Why do you want it?"
Last week, we said that a UMF needs to be:
- Desirable. Strong enough that you desire it with all your heart.
- Valuable. Something you value most and that has the most meaning for you.
- Positive. Stated positively (what you want, not what you don't want).
This week, add the following components:
Congruent. What you choose needs to be completely aligned with your personal beliefs, values, ideals and strengths. If you set goals that are out-of-sync with who you are and what's at your core, the wind will be out of your sails from the very beginning, and you'll fail. It's as simple as that.
Specific. If you use general language, you won't know whether you're accomplishing your goals or not. "I want to have a big house by the ocean" isn't specific enough. What do you want, using as much detail as possible? How much of it do you want?
Measurable. This is similar to "Specific." Your UMF will need to be objective and quantifiable, and must take place within a timeframe.
Controllable. You must be able to control the outcome. You can't control the weather, the stock market or other people, but you can determine things that are under your control.
Have a great week!
