In previous Sales Secrets, we talked about the Ultimate Motivating Force™. Without a strong motivation that you must create for yourself, any goal that you set for yourself is simply a way of measuring your results.
And that's just not very powerful for most people.
Most people either have goals set for them by a management or supervisory level above them. That's a bit counterproductive, because a goal that's too small won't empower you; on the other hand, one that's too large could very well disempower you. Plus, if the goals are set for you, you may resist them or use them later as an alibi if you don't hit them ("They weren't my goals!").
In general, people do not do well with setting or pursuing goals. Fewer than 3% of the population are truly goal-oriented, setting goals for themselves that will empower and inspire them.
So, whether you're given your goals for the year or you aren't, you must create a context (the Ultimate Motivating Force™) for your goals so that you can get excited about reaching them.
To do so, you must start by thinking about these things:
- Your goal must be strong enough that you desire it with all your heart. (It must attract you like a magnet. You must truly LOVE what you want.)
- Pursue what you value most and what has the most meaning for you. (If you're truly family-oriented, what will attaining your goals provide for them? If you're status-driven, who could you be inside your organization? If you're rewards-driven, what would you be able to do that you can't do right now, or have what you don't have right now?)
- State what motivates you in terms of what you want, NOT that you don't want. (You want to be healthy; do not wish to avoid health problems.)
Next week: More things to keep in mind as you begin to set your goals for the upcoming year.
