| S.M.A.R.T. Part 2: Make Sure Your Goals Are Measurable |

When setting S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Sensitive) goals, the second thing you should do is make sure that you can actually measure the outcome(s).
There are two things at play when we talk about measurability.
The first is that the goals have to be able to be measured, which is pretty self-explanatory, but measuring may be more difficult than you think. "I want to lose 20 pounds" isn't specific, but it is measurable, simply by weighing yourself on the scale.
The second, most important, part is that you have to measure the right thing. What if you wanted to lose 20 pounds, but you ended up losing 10 pounds of fat and 10 pounds of muscle. That wouldn't be very good, now, would it?
If, however, your goal is to reduce your midsection by two inches, that would be easier to measure, and would directly reflect what you really want - a smaller waistlline. You don't want to measure weight if you want well-defined abs or smaller buttocks. Losing weight might be a good indicator that you're on the right track, but it's not really the main thing you're after. So don't concern yourself with other indicators.
By the way, you can easily lose two inches with liposuction, so that's why your goals must include the "HOW!"

("I will go on a two-week vacation with my family to Myrtle Beach in August (by car). I won't make any work-related calls or read any work-related books. I will play at least two rounds of golf in which I'll break 90, without cheating, on at least one professional-level golf course.")
THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK: This is a tough assignment: Write a goal that would measure a successful outcome to a sales presentation that would result in your actually getting the order? Now write one that would measure a successful outcome without your getting the order.
