Lyle Larson On Taxes!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and my opponent, Ciro Rodriguez, are now running ads claiming that I support a 23% tax increase. The ads refer to an excerpt of the Issues page of my campaign website which discusses my support for the simplification of the tax code.

The way the tax code has been re-written over the course of the last two decades is unfair to Americans. I would support a major overhaul of the tax code and the Fair Tax could be considered as an alternative to the system we live under now. The Fair Tax replaces all forms of tax collection (federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes) with a national sales tax. Taxpayers would keep 100% of their income and would pay the same amount of taxes at the time of any purchase. The Fair Tax plan includes a rebate to ensure that no taxpayer pays federal taxes up to the poverty level.

Unfortunately, the DCCC mailer fails to mention the Fair Tax and the fact that a national sales tax is simply a replacement for all other forms of tax collection.

The assertions by the DCCC about my position on taxation couldn't be further from the truth.  Ironically, while the DCCC continues to spread mistruths about my position, Ciro Rodriguez continues to support raising your taxes.

My record on taxes speaks for itself. As a Bexar County Commissioner, I led the Commissioners Court to cut the tax rate 7 times in 12 years and led the fight to freeze taxes for seniors. I voted against and refused every pay raise authorized by the Court, saving taxpayers over $300,000.

I will vote to make permanent the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts that are set to expire in 2010. Ciro Rodriguez voted repeatedly to block consideration of a bill that would make permanent the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts on income, marriage penalty, child tax credit, investments and death tax (House Roll Calls 186,192,194, 04/16/2008).

In addition to voting against extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, Rodriguez's voting record proves he does not represent hardworking taxpayers in the 23rd.
  • Rodriguez voted for a $7.5 billion tax increase that threatens over 5 million American jobs (House Roll Call 746, 07/26/2007)
  • Rodriguez voted for a $2 billion tax increase on home sales (House Roll Call 947, 10/04/2007).
  • Rodriguez voted against permanently repealing the estate tax, also known as the death tax (House Roll Call 959, 10/10/2007).
  • Rodriguez voted against making permanent the child tax credit and marriage penalty relief (House Roll Call 83, 02/27/2008).
  • Rodriguez voted four times for the largest tax increase in American history that would raise taxes on millions of Americans (House Roll Calls 212, 03/29/2007; 377, 05/17/2007; 141, 03/13/2008; 382 06/05/2008).
  • Rodriguez voted to raise taxes on the production of gasoline, home heating oil, natural gas, and many other oil and gas products (House Roll Call 454, 06/25/2008).
  • Rodriguez voted to raise taxes on the American manufacturing of gasoline, home heating oil, and natural gas, but exempt Venezuelan-owned Citgo from this tax increase (House Roll Call 83, 02/27/2008).

Based on Congressman Rodriguez's record on taxes, it is clear that he does not have the taxpayers' best interest in mind. I invite both Congressman Rodriguez and the DCCC to stop their misinformation campaign and stick to the issues.
