Where is all the old carpet going?

Making the right decisions about carpet starts with having the facts. That is why the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) sponsors scientific research and gathers data from independent sources to help professionals and the public make educated flooring choices. Visit www.carpet-rug.org to learn more.

The carpet industry is reducing its impact on the environment for present and future
generations.

What You Should Know:
· The carpet industry is concerned about the amount of old carpet that ends up in landfills each year. Carpet manufacturers are voluntarily addressing this problem by
recycling old carpet materials back into carpet production, recycling old carpet into alternative uses such as building materials and auto parts, refurbishing old carpet into new carpet tiles and even hauling away old carpet so it can be reused or
recycled.
Carpet Rolls
· Through the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE), carpet companies,
government entities and product suppliers are working to develop market-based
solutions for the recycling and use of post-consumer carpet.

Many times, carpet is replaced not because it has actually worn out, but because it no longer has the appearance of a new carpet. CRI understands the investment put into a carpet - but also the environmental ramifications of replacing carpet before its time.

Learn more about how the carpet industry is reducing its environmental footprint in
the CRI Sustainability Reports, which can be accessed from the CRI home page by
clicking on Carpet Industy. (check).

To help reduce premature replacement of carpet, CRI established the Green Label Vacuum Testing program. The program identifies vacuum cleaners that keep
carpets looking their best.

The Facts about Carpet Cleaning    and Maintenance

Making the right decisions about carpet starts with having the facts. That is why the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) sponsors scientific research and gathers data from independent sources to help professionals and the public make educated flooring choices.
Visit carpet-rug.org to learn more.

Cleaning and maintenance is a key factor in carpet ownership and selection.
What You Should Know:

1. Proper cleaning is the first step to preserving the life of carpCRI Logoet. Vacuuming is the single most effective means of keeping carpet clean; 90 to 95 percent of all dry soil by weight can be removed from carpet by following a routine schedule.

2. Carpet can be 65 percent less expensive to maintain than hard surface flooring. While buying and installing hard surface flooring appears less expensive than carpet in the short run, the true cost of labor, supplies, and equipment over an average 22-year lifespan makes carpet a more cost-effective choice. (1)

3. Hard surface floors require two-and-a-half times more cleaning than carpet annually.  Hard surface cleaning supplies are about seven times more expensive than carpet cleaning supplies. (2)

4. CRI created the Seal of Approval testing and certification program to help customers identify carpet cleaning products that clean effectively without harming the carpet. For a list of these products, click on Seal of Approval at www.carpet-rug.org.

* Independent testing shows that many cleaning detergents and spot
removers clean no better than water. Worse, they can leave a sticky residue that attracts soil at a faster rate. There also are big differences in the soil removal capability of vacuums and extractors. Choose vacuums that bear the CRI Green Label to remove soil most effectively, while maintaining good air quality.

* Carpet also requires periodic deep extraction cleaning. Seal of Approval
deep cleaning extractors and systems (equipment and solutions)
effectively remove soil and also recover most of the water or solution from the carpet.
