The 7 Principles of Certified Upholstery Cleaning

The world's most recognized body of certification (IICRC) publishes standards for safe, effective cleaning of upholstery. Our company follows these standards to insure that you get the maximum soil and spot removal in the safest manner possible. WARNING: Most upholstery cleaners are NOT certified and do not use these standards! Here are the 7 important steps that should always be taken in caring for fine fabrics.

1.  Fabric Inspection: A simple test which involves taking a tiny swatch of the fabric reveals the fiber content.

2.  Dye Testing: A small amount of upholstery cleaner is applied to an inconspicuous area of the fabric to test for dye stability.

3.   Dry Soil Removal: In cleaning any textile, the first step is always to remove as much dry soil as possible. This improves the following cleaning steps greatly.

4.   Soil Suspension: A preconditioning agent is used on most fabrics to "suspend" the soil for more effective extraction.

5.   Soil Removal (Extraction): A water or solvent based solution is used to wisk away the suspended soils.

 6.   Pile Setting
/Grooming: Textiles that have a "pile" are set after cleaning with a special grooming brush.

7.   Drying: High velocity air movers are used to promote faster drying.

Carpet Cleaning StairsWHY DO YOU CLEAN??

The 6 Reasons People Normally Clean!

Are they the right reasons?

Studies have revealed that there are SIX reasons that people clean their carpets, ara rugs and upholstery. Are some of these reasons more important than others? Are there reasons to clean before your carpets, area rugs & upholstery "look" soiled?

Reason #1: Events. Many people clean because there is some type of event taking place.  Perhaps family is coming into town (or the kids went off to college and you can finally see the floor!).  Although entertaining guests or family on clean carpets & upholstery is a fantastic idea, don't let this be the only reason you clean.

Reason #2: Visible Soil.
The second common reason for cleaning is there is some type of visible soiling. Whether it is a spot or a traffic area, it just becomes unsightly. Many times waiting until your carpet or upholstery is visibly soiled is waiting too late! Traffic area damage may have occurred, and spots may have become permanent!

RULE OF THUMB: Clean your traffic areas BEFORE they show visible soil. This may seem absurd at first, but you will eliminate gritty soil that bonds to your carpet or floor. Traffic area soil that is not removed will abrade the surface much like sandpaper.

Reason #3: Maintenance.
This is one of the best reasons to clean!

By properly caring for your carpets, upholstery & area rugs you dramatically increase their life, giving you many more years of use. Plus, it will look clean all the time!

Reason # 4: Health.
This is also a great reason to clean. Your carpet acts as a "sink" or a "filter". It catches pollens, bacteria, insecticides, asphalt, and many other contaminants that is tracked or blown in.  Many of these contaminants are not removed with vacuuming. The "sink" or the "filter" eventually gets full.

This does not mean you should throw out your carpet. Some allergy doctors have suggested removing your textiles because dust-mites and bacteria breed in soft surfaces. Although this is a legitimate claim, there is more to the story. A Swiss study revealed that public buildings that pulled out carpets because of respiratory irritations, actually saw an increase in illnesses when carpet was removed. The reason? Particles become airborne when the "filter" or "sink" is not there to catch them. This does NOT mean that you should or shouldn't throw out your carpet! It just means that if you have hard surfaces, mop them often. If you have carpets or area rugs, vacuum regularly, and have professional cleaning done before there is visible soil.

Reason #5: Problem Solving.
Occasionally something happens to a textile that appears to be a defect, but can actually be corrected through professional cleaning. Usually carpet manufacturers will require your carpet to be serviced by a certified professional cleaning firm before sending out a representative.

Reason #: 6 Odor Problems.
Pet odors, cooking odors, and other odors make their way into carpets, area rugs & fabrics.  There are a variety of new techniques and products available today that haven't been available before. Get a complete evaluation from one of our consultants to see if your odor problem can be solved through professional cleaning.
