From The Desk of Ms. Chavis
Clinton School accepting applications for high school service award.
Daniel Cayce Award winner will receive $1,000 scholarship
LITTLE ROCK - The University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service is accepting applications for the 2011-12 Daniel Cayce Award, given annually to an Arkansas high school student who best demonstrates selfless volunteerism on behalf of his or her community.
The school encourages Arkansas high school juniors and seniors who have been involved in outstanding community service projects to apply for the award. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
"While our program is designed for graduate students, we feel it is very important to promote the spirit of public service among all ages," said Clinton School Dean Skip Rutherford. "The Cayce Award is a great way to encourage aspiring public servants and recognize the outstanding efforts of Arkansas high school students. We look forward to reviewing this year's applications."
The award was established in 2005 and named after inaugural recipient Daniel Cayce of Bearden who worked for 14 years helping needy families in Southeast Arkansas. Last year's winner was Brady Hogg from Poyen High School who gathered food, money and gifts to benefit the families of heart transplant patients in memory of his brother Jake, who died after complications from a heart transplant in 2007.
Applicants for the Daniel Cayce Award should submit a completed application form, a summary of their community service activities and an essay of no more than 500 words on one of the provided topics.
Click Here to download an application form.
Students may also send letters of recommendation, newspaper articles, or any other material that would help the committee make their decision.
The deadline for applications is May 7, 2012. Finalists will be invited to a ceremony for the award at the Clinton School on May 20, 2012.
For questions regarding the award, contact Nikolai DiPippa at 501-683-5206 or email ndipippa@clintonschool.uasys.edu.

From the desk of Mrs. Chavis:
Reminder we will have Spring Standardized Testing on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings next week, April 10-12, for grades 9 and 10 and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning next week for grades 5 through 8. It is important that students not miss school and that they are at school by 8:00 am. They should eat a healthy breakfast and get a good night's sleep. Bring two #2 pencils, a ruler, a calculator, and a sweater or jacket. Room assignments will be posted for students.
AP Exams are scheduled for the first two weeks in May. Several students have not paid the exam fee. The fee is $87 per exam. This is past due. If students do not take the exam, they are not awarded the weighted credit per state law. Please get the appropriate fee to Mrs. Chavis. Checks should be made to Union Christian Academy.
Many student schedules have not been returned. This form is necessary in order to properly schedule students into their choices. Parents, please sign and have your child return the form. Duplicates may be received from Mrs. Chavis.
Junior girls and boys who would like to develop interpersonal and leadership skills, enjoy a challenging event, and increase their resume should see Mrs. Chavis about attending Arkansas Girls and Arkansas Boys State programs this summer. The dates are May 27 - June 1. This is a very enriching experience and certainly beefs up a resume. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, April 10.
Arkansas School Plant Managers Association scholarship is open to senior students who complete the application and provide the required documentation by May 1, 2012. Criteria are application, ACT scores, school activities, essay and two letters of recommendation. Awards may be up to $5000. Check in the Counseling Center.
SENIORS: Awards Assembly is scheduled for May 4, Monday. If you have received and accepted any scholarships and awards, please let Mrs. Chavis know. In addition, she needs to know the total amount of awards offered. You, your parents, and your institution need to be recognized.
Senior Exams will be May 10 and 11. Specific subjects will be announced at a later date. All grades must be completed and turned in to the high school office by 8:00 am on Tuesday, May 15, including Arkansas Virtual High School.
All Junior high and senior high students are welcome to attend the ACADEMY DAYS 2012 events planned for the third district. Saturday, April 7 at 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm hosted Congressman Steve Womack.
