Junior Class Valentine's Day Fundraiser

Missions
There will be a final Senior parent meeting for Mission Haiti on Thursday, February 9th at 6:00 p.m. in the secondary campus conference room.  At least one parent from each family (of those students going to Haiti) should attend.  All final details will be given at this time.

College Goal Sunday

College Goal Sunday Event will be held on the UAFS campus on February 19, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Baldor Technology Building at 5210 Grand Ave., Fort Smith, AR.  It is a one day event held throughout different sites in the state of Arkansas to help students and families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Arkansas Universal Scholarship Application (YOUniversal).

Students should try to bring the following information to this event:

-The PIN received by going to www.pin.ed.govat least one week before College Goal Sunday. A PIN is needed for both the student and at least one parent.

-Your latest tax information (2011 Tax Returns) for both you and your parents. If you don't have your 2011 tax forms yet...come to College Goal Sunday anyway.

-2011 W-2 Forms

-Social Security Numbers

-Amounts of untaxed income received in 2011

-Amounts of child support received or paid in 2011

-Knowledge of your checking and savings account balances

-Knowledge of the worth of other family assets (other than your home)

-ACT Scores

-High School G.P.A. 

 

Union  Yearbooks

  

Union Christian Academy secondary yearbooks have been ordered.  There are only 13 guaranteed yearbooks left.  If you want to ensure that you receive a yearbook in May, purchase it
now.  Cost is $45.  Purchase yours from Mr. Rice or the high
school office.

It's not too late to order a 2011-12 elementary yearbook!  They are $25 each or $27 with your child's name added.  

 

We also need pictures for the yearbook! (Ex. field trips, class parties, activities, etc.).  You can send them on a flash drive, CD, SD card, via email, or upload them at: Yearbook Pic Uploads

Art Auction
Date: March 30th
Location: AMP'd- Eastside Baptist Youth Center

An exciting "Thank you!" to those of you who have already signed up to sell or auction artwork at the Art Auction!  It has been fun learning about your artistic abilities!  We have both students and parents now signed up to sell and/or auction off art work to benefit our school! 

We would love to have you or your children participate, as well, by donating any artwork you have created for both the silent and live auctions auctions. 

Artwork may include: canvas artwork, photography, pottery, jewelry, sculpture, mixed media, or other creative work falling into the "art" category . 

You may also request an area to sell your artwork!  You take home 80% of the proceeds, and the school receives 20%! 

Please tell any local artist you may know about this opportunity as well!

 A homecoming reception honoring our seniors, homecoming court, alumni (Union, FS Christian & River Valley grads), and their parents/guardians will be held in the secondary cafeteria immediately following homecoming before the basketball game.  Finger foods, cookies, and beverages will be provided for our Union honorees and their families!

The Thanksgiving Break will be only 3 days in the coming 2012-13 school year: Wednesday (11/21), Thursday (11/22) & Friday (11/23).

 

 

Scoliosis Screenings
February 17th @ 9:00 a.m.

Nurse  

Nurse Beasley, along with Drs. Scott and Betty Jo Clark, will be conducting scoliosis screenings on Friday, February 17 @ 9:00 for all 6th grade girls only and 8th grade boys and girls.  Screenings will only take a total of 30-45 minutes, so the students will miss very minimal class time. 
  
 All screenings are confidential and deficiencies will be mailed home.  If you're child isn't in one of the grades to be screened, and you would like them to be screened, please email Mrs. Beasley at stephanie.beasley@unioneagles.org.
  
Student Illness Policy
 
We have had many students out over the past 2 weeks due to illness.  Please remember that our Parent/Student Handbook states that students must be fever free/Tylenol free 24 hours before returning to campus.  This includes any after school activites as well.

 4th Grader Spelling Bee participants received their official Sebastian County Spelling Bee certificates last Thursday, January 26th.

 

Zach Rambo will be representing Union at the Sebastian County Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 4, 2012!

Five Scholarship Myths 

 

The deadline for the March SAT is February 10.  This is not administered at Union.

 

Seniors should be applying for college admission.  If you need a seven semester transcript sent, please sign the list on the Counseling Center door.

The FAFSA can now be completed.  See the information about College Goal Sunday on February 19 at University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

Junior males who are interested in attending Boys State should sign the list on the Counseling Center door or see Mrs. Chavis.

Are you a poet or a writer or an artist?  Do you want to be published?  Now is your chance to enter a contest.  See your English teacher about the details or Mrs. Chavis.  There are different division by grade in both essay and poetry.  The submission must be original and in English.  Poems must not be longer tha 21 lilnes.  Essays must be non-fiction and no longer than 250 words.  The poetry spring contest deadline is April 12 and the summer contest deadline is August and the fall contest deadline is December 6.  Thie deadlines for the essay contests are February 15, July 19 and October 18. The website is www.poeticpower.com.   The art contest deadlines (www.celebratingart.com) are April 3 and November 29.

Check out FastWeb.com for scholarship opportunities.  This is not just for seniors.  Often there are contests and scholarships that you may qualify for as an underclassman. 

It is important to apply to the universities of your choice very soon.  Just because you apply, you are not obligated to attend.  Most have online applications .Be aware of deadlines for college admission and scholarships  and Financial Aid Priority at various institutions.   Check the websites in case of change.

Academy of Arts

The UAFS Academy of the Arts is currently enrolling students for spring in all areas including preschool musikgarten, private music lessons, art classes, instrumental ensembles, theatre, and our choral ensembles.  Students from pre-school through high school are encouraged to register now!  Registration forms are available at http://www.uafs.edu/academy.

 

Valentine Concert coming on Feb. 10 and the other is for the Gospel Fest Concert on Feb. 24.  Don't miss these outstanding events!
