The Union High School Tennis team finished the regular season Tuesday in a deadlock (3-3) against conference foe Mulberry/Pleasant View. The team won the Conference with a 1-0-1 record and ended with a 4-2-2 overall record. They will enter the Conference tournament Thursday as the #1 Seed.
Season highlights included big wins over Northside, Shiloh Christian, Farmington and Acorn. Senior Megan Smith enters the tourney as the #1 Seed in Girls Singles. Freshman Lauren Lewis enters as the #2 Seed. Both girls had outstanding seasons this year for Union. Freshman Dusty Mikula enters the tourney as the #1 Seed and Junior Chandler Harper enters as the #3 Seed in Boys Singles. The Doubles Team of Spencer Hayes and Wankun Sirichotiyakul enters the tourney as the #1 Seed.
Coach Lewis says "The highlight of this experience has been enjoying seeing the progress that so many of our kids have made this year. We have a very young team and will lose only four seniors from a roster of 11 adding a promising future. The team has several returners who have the potential to compete for state titles next season. If they play up to their potential at Conference on Thursday Union has several kids who could earn the right to represent us at state."
The tourney will be hosted by Union at the Fort Smith Athletic Club Thursday, October 6. Matches will begin at 9:30 am with the finals slated in the mid afternoon. Mulberry/Pleasant View, Acorn, Murfreesboro and Union make up the teams competing for positions in the state tournament to be held in Jonesboro on October 19 and 20.
