Celebrate Year Five With
a High Five!
  High Five!
September tenth is right around the corner (Monday!) and it's set to mark our fifth year of getting to know you at Wine Authorities!  These five years have been highlights of our lives, and we're prepared to celebrate in style.  We're crossing the "five-year hump" and offering a week of celebratory savings beginning this Monday (September 10th) and ending next Saturday (September 15th).
A 20% discount will be available on all in stock wines!  You're welcome to use it as often as you like, and all you have to do is present us with a high five when you check out.  It's like a secret handshake, and it gets you 20% off of the price on your favorite wines at Wine Authorities!

A Rare Treat from Chateauneuf!
Coralie & CDP Blanc
Shhh!  Don't tell anyone, but we're breaking one of our cardinal rules and offering a wine above our typical price cutoff of $49.99.  We wouldn't do so, however, without a good reason, and in this case, the wine and the value are simply too great to pass up!  During one of our resident Wine Swami's pilgrimages to France earlier this year, he encountered a truly majestic example of illusive white Chateauneuf du Pape from Coralie Goumarre of the always excellent Domaine Galevan.  Of course, the region's reds are the stuff of legend (and account for over 95% of all Chateauneuf), but its whites can be equally exceptional and due to their rarity, are often more expensive.  Only two cases of this beauty were shipped to the United States, and you'll find them both right here in Durham at Wine Authorities.  You won't see this wine among our shelves and stacks or on our website.  Like a secret handshake (or high five?), you'll have to ask about it in person, and it will be our pleasure to fill you in on all of the delicious details. (limit 2 bottles per customer)

Last chance!
Queen of South West France!
Labranche Laffont
Returning from his trip to the South West of France earlier this year, Grand Poobah Wine Swami discovered a few new selections that have really blown our customers away.  But, he also brought good news about one of our old favorites!  He visited winegrower Christine Dupuy at Domaine Labranche Laffont, whose bold, authentic reds and racy, exotic whites were core wines for us and earned her the reputation as the Queen of South West France in our eyes.  However, two years ago, a national importer picked up the rights to her wines and the prices skyrocketed.  The wines were worth it, of course, but it still disappointed her longtime fans here in Durham.
The good news is that after an amicable split with this national importer we had the opportunity to buy their Labranche Laffont inventory at a huge discount, bringing them back to our previous prices.  Now we've taken this inventory and created a handful of mixed cases for you to see the Queen of South West France at her best.  A few of her wines are now so limited that they will only be available in this mixed case.  All of the wines are epic!

Ros Limerick Contest 2012
Quill pen (for writing limericks, of course!)
It's time once again to get creative* and express your passion, joy, love, and desire for dry pink wines through the always eloquent, heartfelt, and touching... limerick!
From Wikipedia: A limerick is a five-line poem in anapestic or amphibrachic meter with a strict rhyme scheme (aabba), which intends to be witty or humorous, and is sometimes obscene with humorous intent.
The following example of a limerick is of unknown origin:

The limerick packs laughs anatomical
In space that is quite economical,
But the good ones I've seen
So seldom are clean,
And the clean ones so seldom are comical.

* Needless to say, we recommend a glass of wine... or two... to help you gear up (or down?) for waxing limericktic.
Constitution or limerick contest entry?
The Rules:

  1. You must be at least 21 to submit an entry.
  2. Multiple entries are allowed, but each must be in a separate email.  Only poems in true limerick format are eligible to win, but other forms of poetry are welcome.
  3. Only entries submitted via email will be accepted.
  4. Entries must be "clean enough" to print publicly.
  5. All entries are due by tomorrow, Friday, September 7th at midnight!
  • 1st prize - $50 Wine Authorities Gift Certificate
  • 2nd prize - $30 Enomatic Card
  • 3rd prize - Two bottles of any DAILY-priced ross
Our panel of celebrity judges this year is composed of some of the nicest people in the world that we're lucky enough to have right here among us!:
Billy and Kelli Cotter, chef owners of Toast Paninoteca, one of North Carolina's culinary treasures. Not only was Kelly our bronze medalist in our Ros Limerick contest of 2008, but they've both had every ros in the garden this year!  And for God's sake, if you haven't eaten at Toast yet, run-don't-walk to some of the best food around!
Phil Cook, multi-instrument musician, of the American music band Megafaun.  Few people in the world love performing music as much as Phil, and it shows. Whether rocking out in avante-roots trio Megafaun or striking it solo as Phil Cook & His Feat, he's a joy to watch and hear.
Land ArnoldLand Arnold, co-owner of Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill is a recent convert to ros, and a longtime lover of words.  What kind of nut opens an independent bookstore while they're going out of business all across the country? Our favorite kind of nut, one with passion and a fresh, clever perspective. That's what makes Flyleaf so special.

Tasty Tuesday!

This Tuesday, September 11th, we present our mid-week FREE wine tasting.  Every Tuesday is tasty! From 5:00 - 6:30, we host this bonus tasting of three wines to get you through the early week and land you safely on hump day!

Puglia!
It's the dynamic stiletto heeled peninsula of Italy's boot-
shaped silhouette and the origin of some of the country's ripest, spiciest reds and best values.  This Tuesday, we'll be showcasing two brand new representatives of the region's prized Primitivo grape (in both red and ros form) and a darkly rustic example of Negro Amaro.  Find out what Primativo has in common with California's Zinfandel and how it's believed to have traveled around the world!
And don't forget:
Tasty Tuesday 20%
Mixed Case Discount!
After you taste, put together 12 bottles from our Tasty Tuesday lineup, and we'll take an entire 20% off!

sparkling array This Saturday, join us for a toast to five wonderful years of Wine Authorities!  Hot on the heels of a fantastic sparkling wine themed dinner at Guglhupf, we're celebrating our fifth birthday with four of our favorite bubblies - including one deliciously reliable standby and three which are brand new to the shop. These are among the most festive wines we know of, and it's important to remember that sparkling wine is not only great for a celebration but is, itself, always worth celebrating!
