Greetings!
Feeling lucky?
Today is Thursday the 12th, which can only mean one thing. Tomorrow is Friday the 13th! As you might recall from some of our previous comments about New Year's resolutions and the like, however, we aren't particularly superstitious. So now that we've finished breaking mirrors and chasing our black cats under the network of ladders that we've carefully positioned around the store, it is our pleasure to fill you in yet again on some exciting new developments at W.A. This Saturday, one of our favorite guests, Andoni, will be returning to walk you through a sampling of four fantastically diverse classics from Rioja. And speaking of Spain, we still have a few tickets remaining for each of the three featured sessions at this year's Txakolifest. Stay tuned next week as we announce another round of new arrivals (including more previously unseen Ross and a Txakoli never before available in the United States)! Now, with so many exciting, new, and estate-produced wines to enjoy, shouldn't we feel lucky? ~~~~
Txakolifest 2012
Tickets now available!
JULY 21st at SIX PLATES
The Various calling cards of summer keep mounting up, and yet another seasonal milestone looms on the horizon - Txakolifest! Yes, it's the one day a year that Durham breaks out its secret stash of porrons and is transformed into a an unlikely sister city to San Sebastin complete with spritzy Basque wine, oysters, and tapas. Each year this is one of the great celebrations in town, and it's become the largest TxakoliFest in the United States. There will be two reserved sessions, The first (1:00 - 4:00) and the second (4:00 - 7:00) where guests will be given a Txakoli/Sidra glass upon admittance and have at their disposal the ability to order a vast sea of Txakoli and small plates specially chosen to go with the wine. Of course there will be live music and much revelry. This event sells out every year, so get your tickets ASAP at Wine Authorities (cash only) or Six Plates (both cash and credit cards accepted). As usual, we will be kicking off the festivities with our FREE Saturday tasting of several Txakoli from 12-3:00 to get you primed for the party and brushed up on your porron wielding skills (see photo above).

Tasty Tuesday
Tuscan Tuesday with Perazzeta
This Tuesday, July 17th, we present our weekly "Tasty Tuesday" FREE wine tasting. Every Tuesday is tasty! From 5:00 until 6:30, we host this FREE bonus tasting of three wines to get you through the early week and land you safely on hump day.
Last fall, we were thrilled to discover an exceptional new value from Tuscany. Perazzeta's Sangiovese was bold, tangy, and very representative of the region's more youthful reds. Now, another (and perhaps even more striking) vintage has just arrived along with two brand new wines from its dynamic producer. Join us at this week's Tasty Tuesday for a sampling of not only the fun and familiar Sangiovese but an introduction to Perazzeta's bold and vibrant signature white as well as its remarkably rich and affordable "Super Tuscan" red. Salute!

This Saturday from 12 to 3 PM
"try before you buy" at our FREE tasting
The legacy of Rioja is one which is shrouded in mystery, romance, and (often) quite a bit of oak, but it's become more difficult today than ever before to make generalizations about what the region represents. Stylistically, its wines range from impenetrable reds interwoven with vanilla and cedar to zesty young whites that know their way around the patio and poolside. Our tasting this Saturday features four wines from one of our favorite producers in the region which manage to perfectly represent Rioja in all of its delicious diversity. Join our guest, Andoni, as he pours the wines of Bodegas Perica, one of the many fantastic Iberian producers which occupy his specialized portfolio. We'll also be featuring two brand new cheese arrivals from Durham County's goat cheese champions, Prodigal Farms. Their truly fantastic marinated feta and crottin will be on hand, providing fantastic accompaniment to our featured wines.
