Whooping Cough in Babies Can Be Fatal!
|
Whooping cough can be easily passed on from parent to baby. Whooping cough in adults can be as minor as a dry, nagging cough. While the symptoms can be minor in adults, the disease is life-threatening in babies. Whooping cough (also known as pertussis) is a contagious respiratory infection and is spread by coughing and sneezing. It is most contagious during the first two weeks of infection when symptoms resemble the common cold. Newborns are too young to receive the whooping cough vaccine and babies are not protected until they have received at least four doses of the vaccine. To protect them, we need to immunize all close contacts. This includes parents, grandparents, adult family members, friends and adult caregivers who will be in close contact with the baby. It is important to ensure that siblings (children) are up to date on their routine childhood vaccinations. The baby is "cocooned" (or surrounded) by people who cannot spread whooping cough. Since infants are infected with whooping cough from their own parents in 50 per cent of cases, the Government of New Brunswick will be offering publicly funded adult whooping cough vaccinations to new and expecting parents. Moms Link Study
| |

Be a MOMS Link Peer Mentor Approximately 15% of new mothers will experience lasting feelings of depression after having a child. The New Brunswick Department of Health has recognized a need to provide more adequate support to these mothers. The Mothers Offering Mentorship and Support (MOMS) Link study tests the desirability and effectiveness of different supports for mothers with postpartum depression in the province. Up to 200 mothers with symptoms of postpartum depression are being offered traditional, telephone peer support, or traditional plus peer support, along with screening for and information on PPD.
MOMS Link peer mentorship is about mothers offering mentorship and support to other mothers. It's a mother who has recovered from symptoms of postpartum depression, who will call a mother currently going through symptoms of postpartum depression weekly for up to 12 weeks just to talk. A peer mentor cares, and can relate to a mother?s feelings and experiences. If you have fully recovered from feelings of sadness, crying, moodiness, anxiety, lack of energy, irritability, poor memory or confusion after the birth of a child, you can help other mothers by being a MOMS Link peer mentor. Your help matters, because no one can understand a mother going through postpartum depression better than a mother who has been through a similar experience.
