YOUNG ATHLETES PROGRAM
FALL 2011

Yap Season 3 began on Saturday, August 20 and volunteer opportunities are still available. If you enjoy working with younger children, here is your chance to make a difference. Our program is much different than the sports offered for the older athletes as we need a 1:1 coach to athlete ratio.

Please consider joining our fun-filled group and help prepare Seminole's youngest athletes for their future in Special Olympics. As soon as we have enough volunteers in place, we can open up the program to additional athletes.

For more information contact Barbara Costanzo, barbc@cfl.rr.com, 407-718-3259.

RECOGNITION

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Annamarie Nieves

 Swimming and Gymnastics

Thank you to the Special Olympics of Seminole County for selecting Annamarie as Athlete of the Month. We are so proud of our extroverted "social butterfly" who just started 5th grade at Lake Orienta Elementary." Annamarie has been participating in the Special Olympics program for four years now, and as a result, is so happy to be a part of a great "family" of athletes. She has been active in many athletic programs with the Special Olympics including swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, and artistic gymnastics. All of these have inspired her to also participate in programs outside of the Special Olympics as well, including baseball, belly dancing classes, and the Sparklers cheerleading squad. We are also quite proud that she has been selected to complete in gymnastics on two occasions at the Disney Wide World of Sports.

For all of Annamarie's successes, we would like to thank all of the dedicated coaches that provide training for Annamarie and who have become such important role models for her, as well as special family friends.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

Tricia and Joshua O'born

Swimming
I (Tricia) have been involved with Special Olympics since I was a kid. I have a cousin who has downs syndrome and has been a member of the Dorchester Special Olympics in Boston, so my family has been involved for over 30 years with that. When I moved to Orlando 8 years ago, I decided I wanted to get involved here. It just so happened I lived in Seminole County and it was the beginning of the swim season when I called 6 years ago. Josh and I met 4 years ago, and he soon became involved. He was a swimmer in high school and is a GREAT swim coach, with lots of patience and enthusiasm. As a family, we enjoy all the time we spend with the athletes and other volunteers. We have made many life long friends and are forever grateful to be a part of this program.

Special Olympics Seminole County relies greatly on assistance from Sponsors. They are always in need, not only to provide financial help, but to offer safe and productive training facilities to our athletes. Without the generous donations of many organizations, our athletes would not have the facilities, equipment, volunteers or funds to train and compete on a year-round basis for free. We all appreciate everyone's support!
