ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Rachel Watkins

Volleyball
Rachel Watkins, Owen and Leah Bass Rachel and her family are extremely proud to see her named SCSO Athlete of the Month. Through many changes in Rachel's life, one of the constants has been participating in Special Olympics. Beginning in high school Rachel has dedicated herself to being an athlete (she is now 25). Rachel has learned so much being a team member and thrilled to make the trip to the State Games in Track & Field with Volusia County many years ago. More recently our entire family has been enriched in working with Seminole County Special Olympics and especially Nin El-Khoury. Rachel enjoys not just the fun of swimming, basketball, volleyball and bowling, but connects with other athletes and coaches (especially Jonathon) in the most positive way. Rachel counts on the consistency and rewarding interaction of Monday bowling more than almost anything. Thanks to all of you who make the Special Olympics happen it means so much to those of us it serves and connects. |

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Suzanne Pierce
 Tennis
Earlier this year I was asked by a family member to volunteer with the Special Olympics tennis program. I wasn't sure at first if I had it in me to take on this responsibility, but after talking with the program coordinators, I decided to give it a try. After all, I have been playing tennis since high school, and this presented an ideal opportunity to share my love of the game. Luckily, I was paired with an awesome professional coach, Joanna Babyar (Red Bug Lake Park), who led the drills and provided the framework for the lessons. But this has not been all about me, but rather the countless time and effort that so many volunteers give to make the Special Olympics a success. It was an enlightening and humbling experience to work with the athletes as they, in turn, worked hard for their accomplishments - The results at Area Games speak to their efforts.
There are no words to describe the love and appreciation I felt from these extraordinary individuals each and every week. I thoroughly enjoyed these past few months and feel blessed to have been a part of this wonderful organization.
I'll definitely be back next season!!!

We encourage you to consider supporting those who support Special Olympics Seminole County! Recognition of support/sponsorship of SOSC does not constitute endorsement by Special Olympics. |
Special Olympics Seminole County relies greatly on assistance from Sponsors. They are always in need, not only to provide financial help, but to offer safe and productive training facilities to our athletes. Without the generous donations of many organizations, our athletes would not have the facilities, equipment, volunteers or funds to train and compete on a year-round basis for free. We all appreciate everyone's support!
