2011 RECAP FROM ETHERNET ALLIANCE CHAIRMAN

As 2011 ends, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continuing support of the Ethernet Alliance. John D'Ambrosia As an organization, the Ethernet Alliance is continuously striving to increase the value it brings to its membership and the industry.  I have been asked many times why does Ethernet need any marketing, and my response is to always point to Ethernet's continuing evolution and the new technologies that it introduces.  The Ethernet Alliance is dedicated to the expansion of the Ethernet Eco-System.

2011 was truly a busy year for the Ethernet Alliance.  Highlights include:

  • Interoperability demonstrations at OFC, Interop, and Supercomputing.
  • Plugfests for Data Center Bridging, Energy Efficient Ethernet, and 40/100 Gigabit Ethernet.
  • A Technology Exploration Forum exploring Next Generation 100 Gigabit Ethernet specifications.
  • Speaking engagements and panel participations at various shows and conferences worldwide, such as OFC, ECOC, and Carrier Ethernet World.
  • Continuing activities in the sub-committees leading industry efforts in their respective technologies
  • A webinar on Data Center Bridging.

In addition, this year the Board of Director's focused on improving the very organization.

  • Adding clarity to and defining procedures
  • Investing in Interprose as our PR firm to provide an on-going continuous PR focus
  • Use of web conferencing for member meetings and webinar series exploring Ethernet technologies
  • Re-invigorating our university program
  • Partnerships with other groups to expand the Ethernet Alliance's presence
  • Focusing on the Ethernet Alliance Social Media outreach program

This combined approach is yielding an ever-increasing reach of the Ethernet Alliance.   Recently, Bob Metcalfe, the father of Ethernet, mentioned the Ethernet Alliance, and it caused a corresponding spike in traffic to the Ethernet Alliance Website.  Occurrences such as these help drive the industry to take interest in our efforts, which will be used to further our messaging, and help expand the Ethernet Eco-system.

As we look forward to 2012, there are a number of exciting events already planned in the first two months.

  • With our focus on supporting the development of new Ethernet standards, the Ethernet Alliance will be hosting the IEEE 802.3 January Interim meeting in Newport Beach, CA, which will include meetings by the IEEE P802.3bj 100 Gb/s Backplane and Copper Cable Task Force, the IEEE 802.3 Next Generation 100 Gb/s Optical Ethernet Study Group, the IEEE 802.3 Extended EPON Study Group, and the newly formed IEEE 802.3 EPON Protocol over a Coax (EPoC) PHY Study Group.  Those interested in attending should see the following link - http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07e4y9n3wia6bed54a&llr=bqlaqkgab.
  • The Ethernet Alliance will be holding its annual members' meeting on Friday February 17.  Come hear about the state of the organization and discuss the group's future. There will also be the election of the 2012 Board of Directors.
  • The Ethernet Alliance has kicked off a webinar series known as the University of Ethernet (UE).  UE will host of variety of classes from introductory 100 level courses to advanced 400 level courses for experienced users.
To stay informed of our on-going activities and news keep your information current in the Ethernet Alliance's members only area.   If you have any suggestions on how we can better support your organization or the industry, please feel free to get involved and voice your recommendations.

We look forward to a prosperous and exciting 2012.

Best Regards,

John D'Ambrosia
Chairman, Ethernet Alliance
SC11 RECAP
SC11 was held in Seattle, Washington from November 14-17, 2011.  Ethernet Alliance exhibited in a 20x20 island booth with four live interoperability demonstrations, specifically; Internet Wide Area RDMA Protocol (iWARP), RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE), 40 Gigabit Ethernet, and 10GBASE-T.  We were proud to showcase products from Amphenol, Aquantia, Chelsio, Cisco, Dell Force10, Intel, Mellanox, NetLogic, Panduit, QLogic, Siemon, Spirent and Volex on the show floor. The Ethernet Alliance management team would like to thank Spirent Communications for lending us their Santa Clara lab for our hot-stage event, as well as, our technical leads, Rakhee Gorthi and Chris Calandro from Chelsio Communications!
OFC 2012

Ethernet Alliance will be exhibiting at OFC/NFOEC 2012 showcasing how the Ethernet Ecosystem uses optics, how servers are migrating to 10GbE and driving 40/100GbE Uplinks, and show the history and future of Ethernet Optics. Come see our speakers, demos, and panelists at the largest optical fiber conference in North America. Planning calls are starting now!! ETHERNET TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT
Ethernet Technology Summit
February 21-23, 2012
Doubletree by Hilton
San Jose, CA

The Ethernet Technology Summit focuses on the use of Ethernet throughout the networking space. This includes the emergence of 10-Gigabit Ethernet as a key LAN technology on the desktop and in data centers. It also covers the ongoing standardization effort for 40-Gigabit and 100-Gigabit Ethernet. It also includes the use of Ethernet as a carrier backbone and transport method, as well as in wireless, industrial, embedded, and storage applications. To meet carrier needs, the Ethernet ecosystem must include quality-of-service guarantees, management tools (so-called operations, administration, and management or OAM), performance analysis, high availability, scalability, security, and service-level agreements. Other topics of interest include low power systems, power-over-Ethernet, Ethernet as a home networking technology, backplane Ethernet, and embedded Ethernet.

Ethernet Alliance members are being offered discounted passes if they would like to attend this event. To obtain the discount code, please email [email protected].
