Greetings!

It looks like spring will finally come this year. Hasn't it seemed like the winter came early and has just stayed and stayed? Well, today, the sun shone in all its glory, the birds sang, the mud dried up and it feels just like spring! The Ranchers worked in the garden and had to shed their winter coats after just a few minutes. God is faithful. There is a time for every purpose under heaven!!

And how are you faring this year? Is it better than last year?  Psalm 37:25 says, "I have been young and now I am old; yet, I have never seen the righteous forsaken or His children begging for bread." Even our Ranchers, who have no means of self support, no resources, and no influence have never had to beg for bread. They are cared for by their Father through His people--YOU! You are His hands and you are His plan. Thank you for taking that responsibility seriously..

In this Easter season, we want to wish you new hope and fresh vision. In the words of the poet, "Hope springs eternal in the human breast." May God give you the blessing of a new revelation of the person of His Son, Jesus, and the eternal hope that comes from an honest relationship with Him.

In case I haven't said it before, we love you. Yes, we love what you do, but we love you because He first loved us and because He shows us that every day of every week.

So, come on out and visit us anytime. We're always glad to see you!

A Humble Perspective

I'm going to take a chance in this issue by publishing our latest blog. I tend to wax pretty opinionated at times, so if you disagree or have strong feelings about the content, feel free to drop us a line. I'll be sure and respond. If you haven't been to our blog, the address is http://trianglecrossranchblog.blogspot.com .

Many, if not most, of our Ranchers have been on the waiting list for government funding for 10 years or more. Our Ranchers' families pay out of their own pockets in order to place their Rancher at TCR and many pay dearly in terms of doing without. The people who pay the bills are parents with households and businesses to consider; elderly parents living on a fixed income; siblings raising their own children or grandchildren and trying to pay for college; and Ranchers, themselves, who are quickly using up the money left to them through a settlement or trust fund.

The Ranch intentionally works hard at keeping costs at a minimum. I don't think you'll find an organization that does more with less than TCR. But...costs rise every year and our Ranchers' resources diminish. SSI and SSDI funds don't provide enough to cover a person's basic needs, reducing them to living in poverty if this is their only resource. Taxes go up, stock markets go down, food costs rise, electricity and propane bills skyrocket, and the cost of paying qualified staff goes up proportionately.

For a person with intellectual disabilities, making up the difference is not just a matter of going and getting a second job. Indeed, getting a first job is difficult, if not downright impossible, depending on the disability. Very few employers want to deal with a seizure disorder or bear the cost of providing the kind of oversight that our Ranchers need while working. No, most people with disabilities depend on others to provide the necessities of life, whether this translates to family or government, and the people that control the purse strings effectively control their world.

Our Ranchers live at the Ranch both by choice and by necessity. Some families choose to stay in control of their loved one's world, rather than give them over to a system that has set them up to fail in the past. Others are waiting for the government money to come through, but there just isn't enough money to go around; the list gets longer every day and there doesn't seem to be a logical way for the average Joe to predict how that money will be allocated.

So whose job is it, anyway, to provide for adults with disabilities? In my humble opinion, it's the job of the family, the community and church all working together, caring for their own. I'm not a big fan of the "it takes a village" mentality, but in this scenario, it is applicable. If the community and the church would get behind a family with a disabled child, we wouldn't need government programs that regulate us into poverty. If the community and the church invested in their own members, people with disabilities could live where it was best for them, and not be forced into a "one size fits all" mold. If the community and the church focused on doing the right thing in their own hometowns, the only people who would live in poverty would be those who actively chose it.

Pie in the sky? Maybe. Disagree if you want. Say it's a pipe dream if you want to, but I'll tell you that here at the Ranch we have as close to this dream as I've ever seen. Family, community and church work together here to help provide a hope and a future for 10 disabled people. Yes, the cost is high. Yes, it gets messy. No, it's not perfect, but neither are the people who are investing in us. However, the process not only provides assistance for our Ranchers, but creates human beings with high character and deep compassion--pretty rare commodities these days.

And where do you fit? My challenge to you is to go out and find a way to invest in your local community and those people at risk that are near to you. Take care of home before you branch out, and then...branch out. Enlarge your community to encompass more and more people. Go on. They need you. They're waiting for you.

Meet the Staff

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our staff members are amazing people and you need to get to know them. They not only provide protective oversight for our Ranchers, they also set the mood and tone of the Ranch, teach and train in adult ways and behaviors, act as social directors, pastor those who live in their houses, pray for their Ranchers, budget for their household, run activity programs, help with special events, counsel individuals, and a myriad of duties that appear mundane but are essential to keeping the Ranch running smoothly. They are each missionaries in their own right, giving away their lives and receiving very little in return. So, here they are! We are proud of each and every one of them and so glad they've decided to make the Ranch their home.
martha
Martha Carrasco, her husband Juan and daughter Leilani live in Love House with 5 Ranchers. Martha is a consummate caregiver with a true mother's spirit. She cares for each Rancher as if they were her own, imparting a mother's love and discipline to each person. She brings calm and balance with her and is a true Proverbs 31 woman--a steward of her household and a joy to know!! Juan is a strong and quiet family man who has an amazing capacity to love others in his unassuming and consistent way. Leilani is the best thing that ever happened to the Love House women! She brings energy, youth and fun to the house every single day and they love her like a sister. Family is very important to the Carrascos. They travel to Texas several times a year to stay in touch with them and to keep their daughter engaged with those who love her.
donna
Donna Bilinski lives in Faith House along with 5 Ranchers. Donna enjoys the status of the "grand dame" after 9 years of serving the Ranchers and the Ranch. She is full of new ideas and energy and attacks each and every assignment with vigor and enthusiasm. Donna oversees our Gospel Greens program, the anchor of our activity program. Donna is a proud grandmother and loves to spend time with her babies. She loves to lavish her kids and grandkids with gifts and praise.
Ramona Lopez and her husband Leo live in Peace House. Ramona is our permanent floating relief life coach. She works both houses every week, giving our other life coaches their days off and filling in when there are appointments and outings. Ramona has been with us since December and we hope she never leaves us. Both Leo and Ramona love fishing and camping. They are looking forward to spending some time at the lake with the Ranchers this summer. Leo is currently a volunteer, but approaches his tasks with a better attitude and more energy and enthusiasm than we could ask of full time staff. (Pictures not available. Look for them in the next issue.)
bev
Beverly Rodenburg has been our office manager for 6 years, running things with a steady hand and a cool head. She is the go to person for both staff and Ranchers when they need advice, a solution to a problem, or just a listening ear. Bev's most often heard quote is, "Do you expect me to do something about this or are you just venting?" Bev's greatest love is her family of 5 children and many grandchildren. Her wall above her desk is plastered with their pictures and she dotes on them like the loving grandma she is. Not a day goes by in our office that she isn't heard telling one or more of them that she loves them.
larry
Larry Rodenburg is our Ranch manager, tackling broken windows, changing locks, building the latest contraption to satisfy the director's whim, walking fences, dealing with inspectors and all things property related. He's been known to haul off dead livestock as well as work as a temporary house parent in a pinch. Larry donates more time than he gets paid for. He also spends a lot of time working with the kids in the Briggsdale School District as a bus driver,substitute teacher, long time 4-H leader, school volunteer, sports fan and all around good guy.
Finally, Suzzanne Shaw is our director. That title sounds much more important than it really is because without all the other staff members, she would fall flat on her face and never get up. Suzzanne has loved the Ranch for many, many years and is just grateful that everyone lets her walk around feeling important. She runs our Moral Fiber program because next to the Ranch, she loves animals and all things fiber related and spends an awful lot of time playing around with wool, spinning wheels, hand spindles, knitting needles and embroidery thread. She has 4 children that she doesn't deserve, one tolerant daughter-in-law and a patient husband who also lets her walk around and feel important. She is blessed beyond measure and sometimes just sits in amazement at how good God really is.
Soup Supper Success
gloria soup supper
Our soup supper fundraiser was held on February 26th, at Galeton Elementary School. Mary Michel, the mother of one of our Ranchers, came up with the idea, cooked all of the soup and planned the event as part of her efforts to partner with the Ranch. She made beef noodle, chicken noodle and chili. The soup contained noodles made by the Ranchers, themselves, and vegetables from their garden.
The Ranchers brought 16 bags of noodles to sell. They sold out and took orders for another 56 bags. They're excited about finding a small business venture that will bring in money towards a trip to Disneyland. We raffled off a 32 inch flat screen TV, artwork by local artists, teddy bears and gift baskets. The winner of the TV was Jana DePorter of Carr, CO.
The local community really got behind us, buying tickets, buying raffle tickets, making donations, and bringing supplies.  The women of Galeton Community Church, Hope Centre Foursquare of Greeley, and the Women of HOGs made the most decadent desserts to top off a perfect meal.  People came and ate, but stayed to visit with friends. It was a great family atmosphere.
All told, the Ranch brought in over $7,000 for the event. This is three times more than we anticipated! All of the money raised goes to directly underwrite the cost of residency for our Ranchers. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who donated, attended, bought tickets and helped in any way. We have the best community support anywhere!! And special thanks to Mary Michel for all of her work and planning! Thank you, Mary. By way of reward, we may just make you do this every year!!
Easter
Easter is a holiday where treats were given to kids as they were asleep in bed.
But, it's actually the day when Jesus rose up from the dead.
On Easter kids always have a lot of fun.
But, everyone is actually celebrating Jesus rising
Cause He always has been and always will be number one.
Easter eggs are a reminder of Mary giving birth,
Birth to the baby who was the nicest person on earth.
The person she raised is Jesus.
He's one who always saves and protects us.
He helps us in a lot of ways.
In fact if it wasn't for him (sic) we couldn't even have sun rays.
Our Prayer for You
We pray that you would be agreeable, love others the best you can and work together as a team.  We pray that you would stop being selfish, boastful and self-centered.  Hold the ladder and let everyone climb up ahead of you.
We pray that you will be humble and grateful for the people in your life no matter who they are.  Look out for others first and put your wants last.  This was the attitude Jesus had and we pray that you would have it, too.
Philippians 2:2-4, Triangle Cross Ranch translation
Our staff and Ranchers will be praying this scripture in 2010 for all of our family members, donors, volunteers, and friends.
