RAW BAY AREA NEWSLETTER
Greetings!
HHP full body shot
With Valentine's Day around the corner, I am appreciating the sweetness of living healthy.

I spent this morning in a hospital waiting for a relative.  I must say, there is nothing like a trip to the hospital to remind you of the reason why a healthy diet is tremendously important.

I hate hospitals.  I do not want to spend any time in them.  I am not interested in diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease or even the flu.  I say yes to living well with plenty of energy to laugh, run and play.

If your plan for 2010 includes getting fit, staying lean, or becoming more vibrant, let's get started. I am offering a HUGE discount on classes, including 3 classes for only $120. See below for details.

In this newsletter you will find plenty of Valentine's Day sweetness to tempt your palette, and nourish your soul.  That includes my FAVORITE chocolate sauce (perfect for dipping, spreading and smearing in all sorts of ways).   Plus a feature article on Cooked courtship and the trials of a raw food relationship and of course a little info on aphrodisiacs.

Bon Appetite!

--Heather

RIMYI
Food as Medicine: Insights from India

or

Tips for Traveling in Third World Countries

I just returned from 5 weeks in India.  I was mostly in Pune, studying at the Iyengar Yoga Institute. Given the nature of my life there, I didn't try to keep to my preferred eating regime.  But I did truly use food to medicine to keep me strong and healthy.

First, in the weeks before the trip I boosted the amount of probiotics and fermented foods I ate.  I made plenty of sauerkraut, kimchee and komboucha.  I am sure that they helped promote beneficial flora for my gut.  I also took Grapefruit Seed Extract which is alkalizing for the blood and contains beneficial bacteria that help protect against the typical third-world waterbourne and food illnesses.

Next, I packed many important things into my suitcase:

Vitamineral Green - I took a huge bottle of this green powder with me.  Every morning I blended fresh fruits into a smoothie, and added a huge tablespoon of the green stuff. And yes, I did bring my blender.  A tribest travel blender.

E3 Live & Spirulina - I brought the capsule form and took it diligently.  E3 Live to boost my brain, Spirulina to boost my body function.

Camu - this superfood is a Vitamin C powerhouse.  Good for boosting my immune system.

Chia - powerful breakfast.

Almonds and Cashews - the only way to make sure I get raw nuts is to bring them with me.  I made them into milk to have with my chia.

Lucuma and Stevia - Lucuma is a delicious powdered sweetner that I love in my chia.  in fact, Lucuma is among my favorite sweeteners in general.  Stevia is a powdered herb that happens to also be a powerful sweetener.  Its great in tea and chia too.

Crackers, fruit leathers and other dehydrated goods - Both homemade and store bought, I enjoyed these the whole trip.  For which it kept me out of rest stops and snack shops, for which I am totally grateful.

Ode to Green Smoothies

group shot
My favorite green smoothies this week was Orange - Banana - Mango - Spinach.  The 2 oranges and 2 cups of spinach were from the farmers market.  The 1 cup California mango I froze this summer and just pulled out of the freezer.  I added a few cups of water and blended on high.  Voila!  Instant sunshine.

Victoria Boutenko wrote a fabulous song about her love of green smoothies.  Listen to it here, Abba never sounded so good.

If you would like more smoothie ideas, click here.  15 recipes from Sergei Butenko plus a fun video.

Institute for Urban Homesteading:

I am proud to join the faculty of the Oakland based Institute for Urban Homesteading.  The Institute has classes on everything from bee keeping to gardening.  I will be teaching a class on Nut Milks and Cheeses, and a Introduction to Dehydration.  Both of these classes are happening because of requests from students like you.  I hope to see you there.

Feeling blah this winter?  Suffering from Emotional Eating?

Ready to lighten your mental load?feeling blah

I am thrilled to offer a 21-day cleanse starting March 20th, co-caught with Olga Aura and Jane Gayette.  It is 21 days of raw foods and includes weekly calls, coaching and colon therapy.  You can participate in one aspect of the cleanse, or all.  I will have info up on my website soon.  For now, you can check out the information here.

You can get a sneak peek at the program and meet Olga Aura on February 26th at an event at my house focused on "Breaking Free from Emotional Eating".  Click here for the details.

Making a Valentine's Day meal?

Try to include the following ingredients, as they are supposedly aphrodisiacs.  Perhaps use in small quantities.  Not only are they powerful, most are also tropical this time of year:  Almond, Banana, Chocolate, Carrots, Fennel, Nutmeg, Pine Nuts, Vanilla, Pineapple, Tomatoes, Basil, Rosemary, Cucumber, Cinnamon, Ginger, Avocado, Honey and Chili

COOKED COURTSHIP

Can you be successfully raw with a partner who isn't?

Ok, this is it. You've decided to be committed to raw foods. You've come to terms with how great you feel.  You have perfected your every day recipes, and you have a routine that's both doable and exciting. You have fallen in love with yourself all over again, or for the first time for real.  You have made a choice to live life as a whole new you.

With so much renewed vibrancy, you can't help but want to share with your friends and family the benefits of your raw food journey. Right?  In doing this, you may find instant support or you may find yourself alone, continuing to share your wonderful new food and patiently waiting for them to see what you see.

What happens, however, in a partnership where your significant other didn't join you in your raw discovery, or if you are in a new relationship with someone who eats vastly different from yourself? Does love truly conquer all? Or, will you find yourself in a losing battle and, possibly, with a lost love?

It may be, that do to the relationship around you that you decide that living 100% raw is not for you. Preparing and sharing food has always been an important way we socialize and connect with those around us, and a special way we are able to show love. If you find yourself with a partner who eats differently but is willing to explore new foods, with a little flexibility in your own diet, you could easily find a balance.

Above all, consider is your personal priorities and where you are going to draw the line. Consider the following factors:

  • Why do you want to "go raw" in the first place?
  • Do you have existing medical conditions like asthma, cancer and dancer where a high raw diet is critically important?
  • How do you feel while on a high raw diet?

You may find that 100% raw is critically important.  Or, you might find that it is important to you to eat mostly raw and get a certain amount of daily greens, yet you are willing to have a cooked meal once or twice a week or incorporate meat on certain occasions or with certain company?

Whether or not you decide to "stay raw" in a cooked food world, there are many ways that you can eat healthy, raw foods that do not seem too odd to those eating cooked foods.

Consider these:

  • Have a green juice or smoothie every day
  • Have a green soup or salad every day
  • Have raw crackers, breads and fruit leathers on hand to snack on
  • Have raw cereal, granola and chia to eat for breakfast
  • Enjoy nut milks rather than dairy.

When considering how to eat raw and be in a successful relationship, you have to first be honest and realistic about your guidelines and how it is you need to eat in order to feel best about yourself. When you are ready, you will find a way to share this information with your loved one.  All strong partnerships are based on honesty, so sharing your values around health and food will be an important step. If met with acceptance, the relationship could prove even stronger. If met with resistance, you have some choices to make.

What role does food play in your relationship? If you find that you and your partner can happily prepare food for yourselves individually and then dine together at the same table at the same time, then this is an option. Or, perhaps you will make your raw food most of the time, and share it when you are partner seems interested.  If, on the other hand, you find yourself feeling isolated and unable to share an important piece of your life and self, then you may need to discuss a compromise or reevaluate how fulfilling the relationship truly is.

In any case, this is the month where we celebrate love, so take a moment and turn your eyes inward. The more love you give yourself, the more love you have to give to those around you. No matter where you are in your burgeoning or existing partnerships, make sure, first and foremost, you are head over heels for YOU.

Chocolate Velvet Sauce

recipe by Cherie Soria and Living Light International

Yield: 1 1/2 cups (3 servings)

1 avocado, peeled and seeded

6 tablespoons cocoa or carob powder

¼ cup agave nectar

2 tablespoons evaporated cane sugar

½ teaspoons vanilla extract

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons plus ½ cup purified water - add more to achieve desired consistency

  1. To make combine the avocado, cocoa or carob powder, agave nectar, evaporated cane sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon in a food processor outfitted with the S blade with half of the water, and process until the mixture is smooth
  2. Add the remaining water and process again until well blended.  The more water you add, the thinner the sauce will be.  (If using a blender, be careful not to blend too long or it will beat too much air into the sauce and it will become too fluffy)
  3. Store in a sealed glass jar in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Variations:  For chocolate frosting, do not add the remaining ½ cup of water. For chocolate mousse, use a high powered blender and add only ¼ cup of water total.  For frozen fudge bars, freeze in popsicle trays.
