Raw Bay Area Newsletter
Heather with lettuceDear ,

Eating locally and seasonally with fresh foods can help your transition to fall and winter.  This October issue is chock full of reviews for everyday living, including sources for everything from crackers to cleansing.  I hope you enjoy it.

Raw foods have the power to lift away the mental fog, increase your energy, improve your skin, prevent illness, and help you build a strong immune system.  Eating raw food is not about restrictions, the latest fad or counting calories.  Rather, food habits built around raw foods will bring your life into balance.  Even during the winter!

Over the next few weeks there are great opportunities to support your own commitment to eating more healthy: Mexican Fiesta and a Raw Food Intensive are two of the many classes coming up.  The Raw Food intensive is a 101 course that includes a talk on how to stay raw in the winter.  It is not to be missed!

Yours in vibrant health,

AirportTipsCleaning your body from the inside out
Olga Aura
I just finished a cleanse which I would highly recommend.  The 21-day cleanse with Olga Aura, Elaina Love & Jane Guyette.  21-days seems like a crazy long time, but it wasn't.  The first week is about transition to raw foods and by the second week you are feeling awesome.  The third week you detox further while still feeling great.  I loved this cleanse because it was structured, offered expert support and had tangible results.

The cleanse package includes a large volume of recipes, weekly conference calls, 3 colon hydrotherapy sessions, some individual counseling, a support partner and much more.  Many powerful things happen on this cleanse.  For me, it was getting back to mindful eating and discovering a whole new volume of recipes that I love.  For many the cleanse includes weight loss, better skin and a whole new YOU.

The change of seasons made me what to clean from the inside out.  If you want the same, the next cleanse starts October 25th.  This is what Olga says:

Have you been wanting to...

Strengthen your immunity?
Free your body of stored fat and toxins?
Increase your
energy, clarity, and productivity?
Get out of a rut and live YOUR best life?

Then the Guided 21 Day Cleanse is exactly what you have been looking for:

AirportTipsHeather and her cracker crisisLydia's Crackers

I have no idea what was going on.  One minute everything was fine, and the next minute I was desperately, crazily, hungrily craving crackers.  Crackers crackers crackers.  Where could I find them?

I knew the craving was coming on, because I was at Cafe Gratitude and bought some.  But then walked out without them in my hand.  So I went to Farmer Joes.  They had never even heard of raw crackers.  So I went to the Food Mill.  They felt bad for me, but had no crackers.  So I called Nikki my fabulous raw food chef and business supporter who happens to live upstairs.  I demanded crackers from her, but she just laughed at me and said no, she had no crackers.

Oh have mercy.  It would be 12 hours till I could have my own crackers ready.  The smart thing to do was simply to go over to Whole Foods as they have PLENTY of crackers.

Lest you have a similar cracker crisis, let me give you a short rundown of what is available these days in the fabulous world of crackers.

Cafe GratitGratitude Crackerude:
I really like the
three crackers that they offer:
  • Buckwheat Crackers which are more like a sourdough flat bread.  I LOVE these things
  • Flax crackers - A very light thin cracker good with a pate
  • Almond toast - A chunky toast that is very pretty.  Looks like a savory brittle.
Rainbow Grocery:
I love Rainbow because they carry so many different brands.  However, you do have to try everything to see what you like best:
  • Raw Makery:  Offers many kinds of breads and breadsticks.  I just love the idea of chomping on raw breadsticks.  They are fun and crunchy.  I kinda like the curry flavored breadstix.  Maybe you don't like the taste at first, but it does grow on you.  In the right mood, you might find the bag goes quickly!
  • Foods Alive:  Offers many kind of crackers.  Umm, I am agnostic about them.  They all are ok, but to you they might be GREAT.
  • Its Alive!:  Offers a whole spectrum of raw crackers that include sauerkraut.  I applaud this adventurous company and I find that their dill, garlic version is rather tasty.
  • Love Force:  Each package comes with 1-2 large, thick slices.  I have tried to like them, but cannot seem to yet.
Whole Foods:
Every Whole Foods varies in the variety of raw crackers they carry.  Usually they carry at least 3 - 5 brands or flavors.  This is my favorite:

  • Lydia's Organic Crackers:  Lydia makes her crackers locally, and she was one of the first in the industry.  Her crackers lean toward awesome.  All the flavors are great, and I especially like the Fiesta
ME:
  • In Monday's Mexican Fiesta class you will learn to make Hot Red Pepper Chips.  In my Raw Italy class we make another type of flax cracker.

On-line sources for these and other raw crackers include:  rawfoodworld.com, naturalzing.com and rawguru.com

What do you eat with crackers?  How about soups and pates to start with.

The best cheesecake I have tasted, EVER.
Lemon Cheesecake
I was wandering around Rainbow Grocery the other day and was shocked to find them sampling something that I was gobbled down without a second thought:  Raw Cheesecake!  I tend to find raw cheesecakes way too heavy.  But this one was fabulous!  i mean really fabulous.  The folks at customer service geeked out with me about how fabulous it was.

The brand is Earth Cafe.  Only Rainbow carries them, so make your way over there to the refrigerator near the Customer Service desk.  Rainbow carries several flavors.  I love all of them, but my favorite is the Rockin Raspberry.  There is a holiday themed Pumpkin Spice that just came out and I have yet to try it.

If you simply cannot make your way over to Rainbow, you can order a whole cheesecake from Earth Cafe on-line here.  Forget sending bags of popcorn or cookie tins this holiday.  I cannot think of a better food gift to send anyone than this cheesecake.

Energy Soup
Energy Soup with Lady

With fall here, I have started depending on soup to get me through the day.  There are so many wonderful soups in the raw food world:  corn chowder, cream of tomato and even lentil soup!

My favorite are the green soups.  My body loves them and they especially bolster my immune system.  I will be teaching my FAVORITE green soup at the upcoming Raw Food Intensive.  This recipe is another one I love.

I enjoy my soups at room temperature, right out of the blender.  But I often do warm them up, either in the dehydrator or the stove top.  If on the stove top, I just put it on the lowest heat and stir constantly until the soup is warmer than my finger.  Sometimes if it is a very thick soup, instead of warming on the stove, I blend in a little boiling water to dilute and warm it up.

I always serve my soup in a bowl or glass, with a drizzle of olive oil or my new favorite - Pumpkin Seed Oil.

Energy Soup
Makes 6 servings

·         3 cups Rejuvelac or water
·         3 apples, peeled and chopped (golden delicious is a good choice)
·         3 cups spinach leaves or kale (de-stemmed and chopped)
·         1 1/2 cups sunflower greens
·         1 avocado, peeled
·         3 tablespoons dulse flakes

Place the Rejuvelac and apples in a blender and process until smooth. Add the spinach or kale and sunflower greens and blend. Add the avocado and dulse and blend until smooth.

Rejevelac is a probiotic that can be found in the beverage section of Rainbow Grocery and other health food stores.  It helps build your digestive strength, and will keep the vibrant green color of this soup from turning brown.  Wow!  Have fun with your liquid health - its fuel for the body!
