What makes a great family photo? First it would be great lighting.I am always looking for great lighting. The best light of the day is early morning or early evening. I always use off camera flash which helps to brighten eyes and eye sockets. There is nothing worse in a family photo than dark circles under the eyes because the lighting was not perfect. Posing is also critical.Families should be positioned in a way that each family member has a prominent spot and each face can be seen. Also, each family member should be positioned to the most flattering twist of the body. And finally, interaction. I love photographing families that actually interact with each other. Interaction shows relationships. Most photographers (including me) will start off with you looking at the camera. But I always like ending up with the family having fun. Relationships is key in a family photo.
