From the Dean's Desk. . .
According to Hallmark and the American Medical Association, February is the month we are to focus on matters of the heart. Matters of the heart are at the core of our spiritual journey. Not only do we "find answers in the heart" (FAITH acrostic), but the heart chakra is the doorway from our more self-serving centers to our more altruistic centers of compassion and attunement with Higher Mind, Higher Will, and Higher Love. While the classes we offer at Sancta Sophia are intended to stretch our mind, they also are intended to stretch/open our heart. In our evolving journey to become more Christ-like, we are to love as and whom God loves; we are to demonstrate that love in action/service; and we are to radiate love from not simply our heart center, but our entire essence. As the old spiritual goes, "They'll know we are Christians by our love." It is in loving that we come closer to God; others see God in us; and we restore God's plan on earth. We need both mind and heart - not sentimental emotionalism (although it has its place) - but the full marriage of knowledge and love into wisdom. The heart-math science validates what we know esoterically about the vibratory impact of love. So what does all this have to do with this month's newsletter?
Courses we're offering give us the opportunity to learn how to love more. Tantra Yoga is an online course offered by Donna Mitchell-Moniak which strengthens our union with the Divine Heart; 5 Rhythms™ Waves with Visudha de los Santos teaches us how to move our body freely in loving harmony; ben Worth's Silent Retreat allows for an inner journey to the temple of our own heart; Pastoral Care II will provide tools for extending loving pastoral care; and Spiritual Care in Crisis and Trauma is a course designed to empower us to offer love and support during the critical and challenging times of life.
The specific Master of Divinity degree preparing one for chaplaincy work is grounded in developing a compassionate heart. If you feel drawn to hold others spiritually in health crises or end-of-life times, then our program is for you. I would also commend to you a wonderful and descriptive article on working as a chaplain, which was written by Rev. Kerry Egan, My Faith: What people talk about before they die. On a personal note, thank you to all of you who have shown such compassion to me and my family during our challenges as my mother transitions. Your gracious hearts have upheld ours.
Blessings of peace,
Susan |

 Becoming Physicians To The Soul
A Free Workshop and Research Project presented by Sancta Sophia Seminary Doctoral Candidate, Rev. Anne Smith.
This workshop explores historical and cultural perspectives on death as well as attitudes and experiences concerning communication across the Veil. 'Acceptance' of our significance as a person depends on knowing that we are accepted by someone or something larger than our individual self. At this juncture, those who minister to the needs of the dying may become physicians to the soul, and in exchange, those experiencing the dying process can teach the importance of 'grace' in our lives. While this workshop is open to anyone, it may be of special interest to physicians & those working in the medical field, ministers, hospice workers, bereavement & AA counselors, life coaches, others who are interested in communication across the Veil and those who are grieving beloved ones. As a major part of Anne Smith's Project/Dissertation as a Candidate for Doctor of Ministry, your commitment to the project is extremely important. What is required of you?A commitment to attend all online sessions.
Download the free workbooks Becoming Physicians to the Soul Workbook and Couples Across the Veil.
Fill out the pre & post workshop questionnaires.
Return the questionnaires to Anne Smith via email (The results of the questionnaires will become part of her dissertation.)

Article: Pastoral Counseling Today Gaining Momentum
Source: American Association of Pastoral Counselors http://aapc.org/
Demand for spiritually based counseling is on the rise. Indeed, interest in spirituality is on the rise. A recent report, Religion and the Public Interest, incorporating the research findings of groups including the Gallup Organization and Lilly Endowment, Inc., reported that 96% of the population - 242 million Americans - say they believe in God. A 1996 USA Today survey found that 79% of Americans acknowledge that faith can help recovery from illness. According to another survey, 77% of patients feel their physician should consider their spiritual needs. In a 1994 Newsweek poll, 58% of respondents said they feel the need to experience spiritual growth.
Despite increased interest in psychotherapy and increasing numbers of therapists, the advent of managed mental health care has brought a reduction to many people of counseling services available to them. As a result, many people . . . Read more

SR100 Silent Retreat: Living in Two Worlds--Feet on the Ground, Heart in Heaven
Facilitator: ben Worth
Life on the ground includes ideas, emotions, beliefs and sensations. It is filled with beauty, laughter and accomplishment while also challenged by attachments, desires and preferences. Heaven is the ultimate truth of non-dual reality. It is a realm that cannot be perceived by the five senses yet informs our actions and allows for the peaceful appreciation of the relative world. With our feet planted firmly on the ground we can celebrate the richness and texture of the relative world. With our heart in heaven we are in the center of a universe that has no center. This retreat will provide experiential learning in awareness, stillness, aliveness and presence--the threads that weave two worlds into one. Meals will be taken in silence. Cost: $125 To register: Call 800-386-7161 or Email registrar@sanctasophia.orgFacilitator bio
