Sparrow Hawk Villager Online Edition
Current Issue: Apr.-June 2010 |
|
Greetings,
As lavender wildflowers bloom along 730 Road, Villagers take delight in bunnies, chirping baby birds, and the promise of fawns before too long. Mothers' Day Sunday celebrates people who nurture others and deserve our appreciation, regardless of gender or actual blood relationship.
Light of Christ Community Church is proud to nurture and help develop future spiritual leaders as they complete a variety of programs through its educational institution, Sancta Sophia Seminary. Outstanding medical schools across the country have associated hospitals which are often called "teaching hospitals." LCCC is a type of "teaching church," and frequently Practitioners in the Ordination program are on the platform officiating and giving Sunday talks. What a blessing for us to hear their wisdom!
This month we worship through sound and poetry, mothering and remembering. Memorial Day weekend brings remembrance of men and women who died in service to America, while we also celebrate the church's twenty-ninth birthday. Although the actual LCCC birthday is three days later on June 2, Sunday, May 30 is our annual Hat Day, where we honor the visionary Founders: Rev. Carol Parrish, Charles Harra, and Rev. Grace Bradley. Please plan to join us for this joyous Sunday, and bring your favorite hat!
See the schedule below and to the left for the wonderful events, classes, and Saturday workshops offered in May. To arrange housing, call the office.
God could not be everywhere, so he made mothers. ~ Jewish Proverb

Sunday, May 2, 10:30 a.m.
"The Power of Sound" Rev. Mary Jane Dicus
Sound, rhythms and words are part of the great web of communication that makes connections in life possible. The ancient practice of chanting has long been recognized as one of the many paths that can lead to both healing and enlightenment. Together we will explore the science of how sound affects our bodies as well as our consciousness. Through the art of chanting, we will seek to connect to the Divine within.

Sunday, May 9, 10:30 a.m. Mother's Day
"Voices of Mothering" Rev. Retha Banez & Friends
Our brothers and sisters in the UK celebrate Mothering Sunday the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of Mother Mary and now, all mothers. It has come to be celebrated in a similar fashion as Mother's Day is celebrated in the US, though the dates of the festivals differ. As in the case of Mother's Day, on Mothering Sunday people give flowers and gifts to their mothers and show their love and gratitude towards them. On this Mother's Day, in the spirit of mothering, let's find ways through our "Voices of Mothering," to express the many gifts mothering brings to each of us. Bring a poem, prayer, story, song, or a few thoughts to share.

Sunday, May 16, 10:30 a.m. Ascension Sunday
"Eternal Great Humanity Divine" Rev. Carolyn Sales
William Blake was one of the great original mythmakers of esoteric spirituality. In his ironic re-interpretation of the Book of Genesis, the creation of the material universe and the separation of Adam and Eve were simultaneous with the Fall of the "Eternal Great Humanity Divine" into egoic self-absorption. Redemption to integrated, inclusive consciousness can be achieved only by the apocalyptic experience of spiritual Truth offered by poetry.

Sunday, May 23, 10:30 a.m. Pentecost Sunday
"If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On!" Rev. Roberta Wilkes
We all know that music has charms to soothe the savage beast. And esoteric writers have postulated that it has helped humanity evolve. What about now? Can music bring us to another level of consciousness? What did the great musicians of the past do for us? And how can their music help us today?

Sunday, May 30, 10:30 a.m. Trinity Sunday/Memorial Sunday/LCCC Hat Sunday
"Remembrance and Celebration" Rev. Retha Banez
Hat Sunday is an annual event for LCCC as we celebrate our June 2 church birthday, so put on your favorite hat and join us for this jam packed Sunday, as we acknowledge three events in both our secular and Christian year. As we gather together on this Memorial Day Holiday weekend in loving remembrance of generations of our men and women who have served and died to secure America's freedom, may we pray to the Father/Mother, Son, and Holy Spirit, and hold a thought form of peace for all humanity.
