October Newsletter Update

Notre Dame presentation in November

Dear Friends,Gil Bailie

I continue to work on what we hope will be a book worthy of the readers for whom it is written, our Cornerstone Forum friends foremost among them. What might otherwise be a distraction from my writing and research, namely: occasional conference presentations and/or my responsibilities as a member of the College of Fellows at the Dominica School of Philosophy and Theology - have actually been a welcome opportunity to further develop several of the themes I will be exploring in the book.

An example of this overlap is a paper I am now preparing for next month's "Radical Emancipation" conference to be hosted by the Center for Ethics and Culture at Notre Dame University. The Dominican School is sponsoring a panel presentation at the conference. On the panel, I will be joining Fr. Michael Sweeney, OP, president of the DSPT, and my old friend and DSPT Fellow, Ron Austin, author and former Hollywood writer, director and producer. I am using the occasion to prepare a much longer paper than I will have time to present at the conference with an eye to incorporating it into the book project.

Of course, while the writing and researching continues to be my primary preoccupation, Randy and I have to do what we can to remain somewhat useful to our friends, hoping thereby to merit in at least some small way your continued prayers and support. So Randy will be accompanying me to the Notre Dame conference, and if all goes well we will come back from it with a video of the DSPT panel which we can share with our friends and donors as part of our annual fall appeal which we will be sending out the week before Thanksgiving. Glitches can always happen when technology is involved, but we will do our best to have something to share with you.

In the meantime, please visit our Facebook page. Randy and I post regularly to the page - even though we're both still Facebook novices. We hope to rely more on Facebook as we become more facile at it. We welcome you advice.

Please keep the work that Randy and I are doing in your prayers, as we will continue to remember you in ours.

With gratitude and affection,

The latest  CD/MP3 from the Famished Craving series, Fame & Myth, is now available on our webstore. In this 11th part of the series Gil Bailie looks at the relationship between fame and myth through examples from texts of the ancient Romans (Vergil's Aeneid) and Greeks (Aeschylus' Eumenidies) as well as from the modern world's celebrity myth making media fonts of fame.

Just as a reminder, our Sustaining donors (those contributing $300/yr or $25/mo) receive these CDs & MP3s for free each month. Regular donors at the $10/mo or $120/yr level receive emailed links to a complimentary downloadable MP3 version of these monthly audio files. And for just $5/mo or $60/yr all donors receive access to our members only Scriptorium web site where Gil is posting draft installments in his manuscript project. (More about that below) We encourage all those who find our work of value to consider becoming a regular supporter of our work. Please visit our Donations page on our secure web store to begin helping us in our efforts to bring a wholehearted faith to a half-hearted world.

Gil has posted over 200 pages in 7 draft installments of the Scriptorium manuscript project. We  have also posted 5 split screen video conversations between Gil and me where we discuss, among other things, questions brought up by our supporters about the draft installments. We encourage our Scriptorium members to send us their comments on any of the pieces posted.

I continue to post excerpts from the cassette tape archives on Gil's weblog Reflections on Faith and Culture every three days or so. (These posts are now being linked to our Cornerstone Forum Facebook page.) Last month brought the Famished Craving series to a conclusion after 100 posts to the blog. I am now working my way through the Poetry of Truth series on the Gospel of Luke. I hope to have the 13 CD Famished Craving set available on our web store by the end of November. An MP3 data CD containing all 13 CDs in MP3 audio file format will also be made available.

We are grateful for your continued interest and support of our efforts. If you find our work of value please let your friends know about our work. These are difficult times for many non-profit organizations dependent as we are upon the generosity of  friends. In the coming days we will be needing all of the supporters we can find to help us continue this work, and 'word of mouth' recommendations are  most useful in helping those unfamiliar with our work to find us. As Gil mentioned Facebook is one more avenue we are exploring to help spread the word about our work. So, any of you who have a Facebook account and friends please 'like' us and let your friends know it. We hope you will visit our Facebook page often and leave comments on our posts.

Blessings,

Randy Coleman-Riese

The Cornerstone Forum

According to then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, the coincidence of
theology and anthropology constitutes "the truly most exciting part of Christian faith."

The Cornerstone Forum is a product of that excitement and an effort to communicate it to others.
