A Note from the Director
|
Amidst this glorious spell of Indian Summer I cannot help but to reflect upon our summer adventures. I thoroughly enjoyed our Museumwise Summer Meet-up series. We had the opportunity to catch up with old friends, enjoyed making several new acquaintances and had a chance to catch up on all of your latest happenings. Many thanks to our hosts for welcoming our guests and supporting our mission. There are loads of fun Meet-up photos on our Facebook page. Interested in hosting a 2011 Meet-up, let me know.
Our week at Sagamore was, in a word, inspiring. Digging into why and how we do the things we do, examining if we can see a better way, and engaging in hands-dirty activities with an incredible assemblage of museum professionals - not to mention the awe inspiring experience of being at Great Camp Sagamore. It's an experience not to be missed!
Our focus now turns to end of the year logistics and planning for the 2011 Museums in Conversation conference. We're aiming straight for the heart this year, rallying the state's museums to join in discussion towards developing a white paper detailing how do WE prove the value of museums.
As we come upon the season for giving thanks, I am grateful to the Museumwise community for pursuing your passion for extraordinary museums.

Get Connected,

Be Inspired!
15 kindred museum professionals from across New York State joined together for a four-day Adirondack retreat to explore the topic of Mission, Vision, Money. Our discussion focused upon the need to maintain a balance among this triumvirate toward ensuring that our museums remain viable as engaging and enlightening spaces. Participants explored methods and strategies for vitalizing their mission and dynamizing their institution's vision to awaken their communities, members and donors to the value of their institution. Discussion ranged from engaging programming, actionable planning and meaningful partnership building. We are grateful to our talented panel of presenters for sharing their innovative ideas and perspectives and for rekindling our passion for the work that we do. I'll share a few comments from our participants ~
- Fabulous, refreshing, informative and practical
- Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sagamore was everything I expected and more. My time here just reminded me that I'm part of a great, wonderful and welcoming community. I cannot thank you enough for providing this opportunity, the presentations, participants and conversations. My batteries are recharged and I'm ready to head back to work
- Thank you! This was an inspirational, thought-provoking week. I am taking away a wealth of knowledge
- Really benefited from this. Good ideas come from ALL sizes of organizations
Special thanks to the Adirondack Museum for their support of the 2010 Museum Institute at Sagamore. Curious about Sagamore - check out the photos on our Facebook page

October is Archives Month
| Archives Month is a great opportunity to raise awareness among key audiences of the value of archives and archivists and to engage local communities in exploring the heritage, culture and wealth of history we New Yorkers share. At the same time, it is a way to emphasize that the evidence of this history exists in the historical documents, photographs and artifacts that cultural institutions such as archives, historical societies, libraries, and museums commit to collect, preserve, and make available. An increase in public awareness of historical records can often translate into increased financial and community support for the care and management of these historical records. Promote Archives Month with FREE Posters! You can receive FREE posters to help celebrate Archives Month! The posters are 12" by 18" and come with information on the State Archives website The posters are FREE and multiple copies can be obtained by contacting Stephanie via email at stephanie@museumwise.org or by calling 800.895.1648 |

Museumwise Member Kudos
| Congratulations to our friends and colleagues at the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center on their grand opening! This house is not just one more dusty museum where you see how an important person lived. It is a museum of conscience in community, where the vision of human freedom and democracy that fired Matilda Joslyn Gage 150 years ago speaks to the present and resonates into the future. It is a dynamic place of civil engagement, where people come together to dialogue about issues like human trafficking, reproductive rights, religious freedom and native sovereignty. Here the Underground Railroad, women's rights, treaty rights and the separation of church and state join Oz as we piece together the amazing fabric of the history Gage embodies so we can better plan for the future. From www.matildajoslyngage.org The Alice T. Miner Museum has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places! The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources. Kudos to the Adirondack Museum Libarary, recipients of the 2010 Annual Archives Award for Program Excellence in a Historical Records Repository," by the New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust. The award commends the library for an outstanding archival program that contributes significantly to the understanding of Adirondack history. The award further recognizes the facility for well-organized and managed archives and for efforts to provide access to documentary heritage through extensive collections and excellent education programs for teachers and school children. |
