A Note from the Director
|
Summer is in full swing and if all is going according to
plan, you are very busy! I do hope you will take a moment of indulgence to
peruse this edition of Museumwise News. As you will see, we've been busy too!
We launched our Museumwise Meet-up series at Buffalo & Erie County
Historical Society in June, setting the stage for the 2011 Museums in
Conversation conference. I am delighted by the planning thus far, truly the Western NY
culturals are an innovative and hospitable group, inviting the field to
discover the wealth of museums and heritage sites in their region. Keep an eye
on your inboxes - we shall soon reveal our 2010 keynoter, a speaker not to be
missed. I do hope you have investigated this year's Museum Institute
at Sagamore. For those involved in planning, development, audience building,
program creation this year's Institute is a must. With the launch of our new website, we are boldly embracing
social media - seeking to meet you where you are and share in the vitality of
your organization. Come find us on Facebook and Twitter and join the conversation. Perhaps I'm
a bit of a traditionalist but I still believe there's something to be said for the
vivacity of in-person gatherings. To that end, we are truly enjoying enlivening
our mission by gathering together with our friends, new and old through our
summer Meet-ups. I do hope you will join us when we visit your region, ask
questions, share your successes, discover new opportunities, catch up with your
regional colleagues, surly a summertime delight.
Best regards for a lovely summer,
~Catherine Gilbert

How Do We Prove the Value of Museums? April
3-5, 2011
How Do We Prove the
Value of Museums? The 2011 conference takes on a reoccurring
question....but with a twist. As museums and heritage organizations across the
state argue their cases for greater integration in an increasingly stressed
educational system, for attendance and volunteerism in increasingly
time-constrained leisure hours, and for funding in an increasingly challenging
economic climate, the need to prove the value of our work to a whole host of
stakeholders is more critical than ever. But what values to quantify and how to
do it? And who will care unless we can compellingly convey our impact? The twist
includes several working conversations throughout the conference to develop a
shared set of values indicators and methods for communicating them to
stakeholders and the public.Submitting a
Proposal
We welcome proposals from a wide range
of institutions and practitioners, within and outside the museum community, to
encourage lively discussions that offer new perspectives on our work and create
new connections to each other. Full

DHP - Security Solutions for NY's Historical Records Workshop
|
To Preserve and Protect: Security Solutions
for New York's Historical Records
Theft of historical documents plagues
records repositories. With careful planning, awareness of warning signs and
proactive security solutions, organizations can reduce the window of opportunity
for historical record theft. Archival security expert Mimi Bowling will provide
an interactive curriculum on archival security, preparing participants to take
immediate action to strengthen their local security programs. Participants will
receive a certificate upon completion. There is no cost.
Topics include risk awareness; insider
theft; facility design and security technology; security of information systems;
working with vendors and contractors; research room management and design;
developing institutional security policies; procedures and post-theft response;
additional topics as requested by participants. Representatives of NY's historical records community,
including archives, governments,
libraries, museums, historical societies, schools and non-profits will be given
first priority. Additional seats are available for security personnel and law
enforcement representatives working with these organizations. Out-of-state
representatives and others interested in the topic are also encouraged to
register. September 13, 2010
