Grants for Museum Advancement
 Planning ahead for 2010
We have
received an outstanding number of grant applications this year - nearly
130 in total! Due to this increase, please note that we have fully allocated our
2009 grant funds, thus we are no longer accepting applications for FY 2009
projects. Applications are welcome for FY 2010 for projects beginning
after January 1, 2010. For more information

A Note from the Director
|

Where has the summer gone? As much as I truly love the autumn I can't help but to feel like we were cheated a bit of sunshine this summer. I wonder, did all of the rain drive visitors to your doors? In chatting with some friends across the state they have commented on healthy attendance records this season. I do hope Mother Nature's dreariness was to your gain.
Fall is off to a busy start as we wrap up this year's Museum Instiute at Sagamore and prepare to hit the road for a string of workshops including our Archives Month workshop at Hanford Mills next Tuesday, a presentation, Beyond Fieldtrips: Building Museum Classroom Partnerships, next Friday at NYSHA's October Conference for Teachers as well as a cameo in the exhibitor's hall at the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums Annual Meeting in Saratoga Springs. Perhaps we'll see you in person, if not be sure to catch up with us on our new Facebook page.
Enjoy the autumn,
~Catherine Gilbert

Know Your Audience...
|
19 professionals from across New York State
joined together for a four-day Adirondack retreat to investigate the topic of Understanding Audiences.
Participants
explored methods and strategies for engaging audiences through innovative programming, visitor-oriented planning and utilizing social media tools. Discussion ranged from preparing ourselves to be on the leading edge of audience trends to proactively capturing the attention of new visitors without disregarding our traditional allies.
We are grateful to our talented panel of presenters
for sharing their innovative ideas and perspectives and for rekindling our
passion for the work that we do.
I'll share a few comments from our participants ~
- It
was wonderful and inspirational. A
can-do, can-put-into-action, many-concepts-learned event/institute. Our Board is eager to learn from this
experience, Loved it!
- Thank
you so much! This was an excellent
experience overall. It's hard to
describe, but a sense of calm came over me which opened up my mind and
heart. I have learned and been exposed
to so much. I have come from a very
stressful time at my museum and this is just what I needed to recharge by
batteries. The memories I will take away
are the conversations during meals and around the lake. Thank you!
- I
love this institute. It is the most
useful and inspiring professional development workshop I have participated in
so far. Excellent work. Thank you for the opportunity.
Special thanks to the Adirondack
Museum for their support of the 2009 Museum Institute at Sagamore.
Curious about Sagamore - check out the photos and feedback on Facebook.

Call for Proposals - Museums in Conversation 2010
|
New York State's Museums in Conversation: What Inspires You?April 11-13, 2010 Albany Marriott, Wolf Road, Albany, NY Sponsored by the Upstate History Alliance &
the Museum Association of New York
We all take inspiration from many, sometimes unlikely, sources. In continuing the conversation format of last year's conference, UHA and MANY seek discussion proposals that focus on what inspires you about the work of others, be they museums, libraries, nature centers or parks, small or big businesses. What have you seen that's been so great, so innovative, so enterprising, so adaptable, and so fun that you want to talk about it with your colleagues? We welcome proposals from a wide range of institutions and practitioners, within and outside the museum community, to encourage lively discussions that offer new perspectives on our work and create new connections to each other. Submitting a ProposalThe deadline for submitting a proposal is November 2, 2009. Proposals must be submitted electronically, as an email attachment to stephanie@upstatehistory.org Visit www.upstatehistory.org to download the proposal form and for more information. The program committee will review proposals and decisions will be made by the mid-November. Questions? If you have any questions or are looking for assistance with developing a proposal, contact UHA Program Coordinator Stephanie Lehner at 800.895.1648

Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums Annual Meeting
|
October 18 - October 21, 2009
Gideon Putnam Resort Saratoga Springs, New York
In 2009, MAAM returns to Saratoga Springs, having last visited the former "Queen of Spas" in 1987. The conference theme, "Invigorating Museums" was suggested by the city's reputation in the nineteenth century as the foremost place to "take the waters," which were thought to have a refreshing and invigorating effect. Indeed, Saratoga Springs appears to offer the perfect environment to talk about ways to refresh and renew our museums-exploring new structures of museum leadership, promoting creativity, increasing relevancy, and inviting and engaging new audiences.
The nationally recognized Gideon Putnam Resort, located in Saratoga Spa State Park and designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a Historic American Hotel, will host the 2009 annual MAAM conference. Distinguished by its classical architecture, Spa Park is listed as a National Historic Landmark and boasts the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the Spa Little Theater, the National Museum of Dance, the Saratoga Automobile Museum, the Roosevelt Baths & Spa, and a championship golf course.
