A Note from the Director
It has been an amazing first month at the helm for UHA. My introduction was at the Sagamore Institute for New Directors, talk about a top-notch experience. The combination of thought-provoking presentations, collegial dialogue and the breath-taking scenery is unmatched.
Throughout the past month I received numerous calls and messages of welcome from our colleagues and constituents statewide which I so appreciate. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know your museums in the weeks and months ahead. My first adventure on the road will be co-organizing the Children's Museums of NY Meeting scheduled for November 13th at the Strong National Museum of Play followed closely by my session at the Hillwood Art Museum and Coe Hall, Planting Fields Foundation Basics of Collections Care II workshop November 16th.
As the year draws to a close and we reflect on all that we have to be thankful for I am hopeful that our conversations will continue to flow to the benefit and prosperity of your organizations.

New Directors Adirondack Adventure
22 New Directors from across the state were selected to attend the 10th annual Museum Institute at Sagamore in September.
Participants delved into discovering their leadership styles and learned key methods for how to manage the myriad of issues facing museum administrators in the 21st century. From mission and vision to the role of the modern museum, strategic planning to developing healthy board relationships participants were challenged to look closely at themselves and their museums.
Perhaps our participants could explain it best...
"This is the best professional experience I have ever had. The opportunity for networking and increase in knowledge was amazing. Attending was the best decision I have ever made. Thank you to everyone responsible for pulling the Institute together and the presenters for going above and beyond."
"Awesome!!!! I was thinking it was horrible timing to spend four days in the woods one week before our huge event-but I am so grateful I did! I am taking away such useful information about my organization and myself."
"The Museum Institute offered a unique opportunity for access to professional experts and real life experience in a relaxing and sage setting."
A reminder to participants we will have an opportunity to reconnect online at the moodle site and in person at the Sagamore Institute Dinner during the Annual Conference.

UHA Expands Online Resources
The
Upstate History Alliance offers a wide variety of resources that are used by
its members, museum staff and volunteers, and researchers interested in topics
pertaining to New York
State and beyond. Soon,
some of these resources will become easier to use. On
November 15th, the Upstate History Alliance will be launching two new features
on the UHA website. First, the UHA Lending Library, a resource available to UHA
Members and South Central DHP Constituents, will be updated to a searchable
database. Now you will be able to search through all of our titles using
keywords, subjects, titles and authors. You will still be able to browse all of
our titles in a downloadable Word or PDF document, but the ease of the searchable
database will allow you to find what you want in less time. The
second update is to the Documentary Heritage Program South Central Regional
Directory. Historical record repositories in the South Central DHP region,
which includes Allegany, Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware,
Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, and Yates counties, will
now be able to upload information about the records that they hold from the
comfort of their own home or office.
If
you accession a new collection, let researchers know by uploading the details
to your listing in the new Documentary Heritage Program South Central Regional
Directory. Are your changing your hours this winter? Has your contact
information changed? Let researchers know!
Updates
will be as simple as completing an online form on our website. Once your entry
has been reviewed, it will be uploaded to our website within hours, providing
your constituents with the most up-to-date information about your organization. Check
our website, www.upstatehistory.org, for
these updates beginning on November 15th. If you have any questions, contact
the UHA office at 800.895.1648.
