The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery. -Francis Bacon
Dear Friend,
I "borrowed" this quote from my husband's blog. Although he's a photographic artist and I'm a painter (among other obvious differences) we are both intrigued with images that suggest without spelling things out. Mysterious, in other words, open to interpretation. The image above, my first in a new series titled "Roots and Wings", certainly suggests a vine covered tree. But where does the mind go as it travels around the surface and imagines the above and below and within?
In the painting of it I became aware of the entanglements that arise with the process of art making and attempting to communicate something about inner mysteries. As I continue to paint this series I will be sharing this process along with the new images in my blog, "Conversations With the Muse".
If you look back on the blog for the past month you'll find figure sketches, art journal pieces, student work from my last workshop, paintings on crinkled Masa paper and more. I've been blogging about my art life since August 2008, not only to share my explorations with students, but because the quiet country life I lead doesn't get me and my art out in the world otherwise. For that reason I have a great appreciation for all the readers of my blog, who help give me that sense of connection which is so essential to an artist.
This coming month in addition to working on the new series I'll be incorporating nature's textures into my paintings using photography and image transfer techniques. And at the March 19th workshop I'll be sharing some of these discoveries and the technical details. At this writing there's still space to sign up for this workshop if you're interested. And you can get a glimpse of one of the processes in this video.
Also registration for a new series of monthly and weekly Muse Groups is open now.
And there's more in this newsletter, so read on!
Cheers, Susan

 Muse Gallery
Lest you think that Imagine With Art is all about my paintings only, I am going to be sharing some of the inspired work of my students, each of whom finds their own original artistic direction. The above piece is Lynn's and she incorporates examples of image transfer here, along with blowing ink and surrealistic collage!

Gerri's piece above is all glitter and luminesense with a fun application of the crinkled Masa texture (hard to photograph though!).
This piece by Sara has so much visual excitement-she's even incorporated some gold leaf-and you can practically hear the flutter of wings!

(Some initial bugs have been worked out, we hope, so try again if you had difficulty the first time.)
Meanwhile www.imaginewithart.com is alive and well with up to date listings of workshops.

 Art Play: Dream Art
The Hebrew word for dream is Chalom, which is derived from the verb "to be healthy and strong", which is a reminder of why we are interested in what dreams may be telling us. They can give us a broader point of view, creating a richer sense of who we are in our wholeness and multiple identities.
But how do you capture a dream? Certainly writing down what you remember as soon as you wake up is a good start. Sometimes words can fall short of describing the dream scene as you saw and felt it. Try "illustrating" your dream in your art journal. Recall the content, the story, the feeling tone, the setting, the characters and any action. What do you associate with any of these aspects, such as the characters. Do they remind you of anyone?
Start by looking for collage pictures that illustrate aspects of the dream. Allow yourself to make loose associations based on similar feeling tones evoked. Start by painting the surface of your paper in colors that will match your collage pieces and inner feeling. Add the collage and let the dream story evolve in a fresh way.
In free writing style, keeping your pen moving, dialogue with any dream figure or part of the art piece, asking it for its insights. Or you may elaborate on the story in the dream art, even continuing the story beyond the actual dream. In this way your imagination acts as a lens for all possibilities of new actions, attitudes and understandings you might apply to your life. You become your own dream therapist.
