Dear Friend,
Not long ago my 18 year old son Andy came out to my studio and "caught" me splattering colored inks around on a piece of paper. I believe he was impressed by how much I was enjoying the process. Half in jest he snickered in that derisive tone teenagers have mastered, "So this is what you do for your job, huh?" Like, yeah, whatever.
It's true. Most people recognize that creative play is a good way to spend time, but few of us allow ourselves to make a habit of it, let alone a "job".
I am constantly inspired by people who have filled their lives with "creative indulgences". In this issue I'd like to share some of these ideas for you to try out on your own.
ARTrails open studios earlier this month was a delight, with a steady stream of enthusiastic art lovers visiting us. Partly as a result of those contacts with many new and old friends/students/collectors, I have created some new workshops for the winter schedule which are published here.
Cheers, Susan

Online Arts Interviews and Podcasts
Arts and Healing Podcast
Months ago I Googled "art - healing" and found this amazing Arts and Healing Network website. Here's what they say about who they are:
"Arts & Healing Network is an online resource celebrating the connection between art and healing. We believe that art is an essential catalyst for creating positive change in the world."
You can subscribe to their newsletter, and Podcasts, interviews with healing artists from around the world who are doing inspiring work. One of their interviews is with Julia Cameron of Artist's Way fame.
Recently they interviewed Leah Piken Kolidas, whose mission is to encourage all of us to do art every day. Her blog is called, Creative Every Day and she has declared the month of November every year as "Art Every Day Month". So you have just enough time to go and check it out and get started on Monday, November 1st doing something creative every single day!And check out the other podcast interviews as well. For those of you unfamiliar with podcasts, they are radio shows that you can listen and subscribe to either on your computer, or on an MP3 Player (i.e. an iPod).LadyBugLive Gallery RadioI was interviewed this week for an internet radio show which will be available to download around November 21. The interviewer, Dottie Moore, an artist herself from South Carolina, and I had a great time talking about everything from art journaling to meditation to figure drawing and life passages. You can read about it and listen to the 20 minute interview at the LadyBugLiveGallery at your convenience after November 21. |

Comment from a recent Muse Group student: "After dormant years a new freedom of expression was discovered and let loose. Now, it's not just about technique and materials. It's self exploration. LIfe exploration. spiritual exploration. It's letting what's inside come out, honestly, without judgement." -Linda

Art Play: Cheesecloth

Here's what I thought of when I applied the "I wonder what would happen if. . ." method to cheesecloth. . .
Paint a layer of thickly pigmented watercolor paint and while it's wet, press the cheesecloth down into the paint. When it's almost dry, paint over it again in the same or a contrasting pigment. Allow to dry fully, and then pull off the cheesecloth to reveal the pattern below.
Or. . .paint some cheesecloth with fluid acrylic paint: spray first with water and then paint over the cloth on a washable surface. Hang up to dry. Use it as a collage piece for texture and design.
Or. . .press cheesecloth into wet acrylic paint, which has been painted on to allow at least a couple colors to blend. Allow to dry somewhat, then pull off the cheesecloth before it sticks permanently. When dry use the painted cloth in collage on the same piece, which moves the colors around the painting in a harmonious and interesting way.
Or. . .paint the surface of the dry cheesecloth with fluid acrylic paint, press it gently onto the paper surface to transfer the pattern. Pull cloth off and let dry.
Or. . ."embed" collage items under the netting of the cheesecloth before gluing it on.
Or. . .use the cheesecloth for textural and sculptural accents on the page, playing with the shape of it before gluing down. When dry, paint over it with acrylic or watercolor paint.
Note: Use matte or gloss medium for gluing cheesecloth, painting under and over it.
Now. . .what else can you think of to do with cheesecloth? Give it a try!

Poem Crazy
My husband Bob, always on the look -out for books on creativity, passed this one on to me. Poem Crazy: Freeing Your Life With Words by Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge is a gem. I have so many mini post-its in it now, that I'll never get to all the fun writing exercises she recommends. They're all about the spice of the every day here and now experience. For those of us who do art journaling, this book is a goldmine. |

If you hear a voice within you saying, 'you are not a painter', then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. -Vincent Van Gogh
