picture, SusanDear Friend,

September begins the season when my husband Bob and I get really busy preparing for ARTrails Open Studios and all the events leading up to it. Harvest time in wine country spawns festivals every weekend as the weather becomes even more enticing and the landscape colors more lavish.

We just updated my website gallery with some of my newer work, so please take a look, and take advantage of the "full screen" button on the right.

In this issue I offer some ways to expand your repertoire of mark-making. I'll give you the details about our yearly open studio extravaganza in October and ways to get involved in Imagine With Art workshops.

Hoping to share this colorful autumn season with you in person!

Cheers,
Susan

I am now working in my visual journals using a wider range of mediums with more courage and enthusiasm.  This is the best class I've taken in many years. -S.J.

You put lots of heart and soul into these groups and you have created such a warm supportive atmosphere in which to learn.  -Suzanne

Art Play:  Expressive Mark Making

Put on some music and start moving.  You're going to make these marks with your whole body, preferably standing up.  Start with a big sheet of brown craft paper or some other sturdy paper that you will feel free to experiment on. Try this with dry media like charcoal or pastels, or dip pens with a variety of nibs, sticks, and brushes into ink. Dark or bold colors are prefered.Use your fingers, palm, nails.

Let the movement go from your body through the mark makers and onto the paper.  Feel the sensuousness of the lines contacting with the paper.  Imagine that you are tasting some exotic dish that has many flavors you can just barely identify.  Allow the marks to speak to you in their own language, separate from your own usual one.

Draw with your non-dominant hand.  How does that feel different?  Start with drawing your name and then let that hand have a mind of its own. Write in a foreign language you have never seen before.

Let your hand go wild if it wants to and make lots of repetitive spirals or boxes or whatever feels right. Now try some other kind of mark which is less instinctual to see how that looks and feels.

You now have a new alphabet of marks at your fingertips, ready to use in paintings, your art journal, or in collage.

What art offers is space - a certain breathing room for the spirit.  ~John Updike

Allow time and space for your imagination to take flight.  And let me know what comes of it!

Cheers,
Susan
