Dear Friends,
It's
been a summer of art on the go and in the midst of fun activities with
family and friends. My husband and I are the peanut butter in the
sandwich generation, with teenage boys and elderly mothers to care for,
so he grabs his camera and I my sketchbook as we run out the door.
Maybe retirement is when one gets to spend 8 hours in the studio
painting?
Nevertheless
I got to lead workshops this summer with a group of Canadian artists in
upstate British Columbia and with local teens, went on a couple of
"paddle-sketches" on high Sierra lakes, made Inuit rock sculptures and
learned some new book art-making skills. Most
of these activities get shared on my Art and Sketchbook Blog on a
regular basis, but I wanted to start a newsletter that offers not only
workshop opportunities but various taste treats to juice up the
creative life, like Etymological Inspirations, Art Play Techniques,
local plein air and figure Sketch Opportunities, Hot Blogs and more.
(I'm not that great a cook, so I won't be including recipes!)
And
when you're done reading, grab a pencil or pen or brush or anything
handy and do a bit of art. It's sooo good for your health!

Imagine With Art Workshops
|
There is still time to register for the Tuesday Evening Muse Group
starting September 1. The Muse group is a laboratory to
spark creative
expression, an opportunity to treat yourself to a regular infusion of
art play in a supportive group setting. Each session features a
different painting or art technique which you can add to your
repertoire - from textured collage to a variety of wet media painting
techniques. When: Sept 1-Oct.6, 6:30-9:30pm Cost: $180
Comment from a Muse group participant about this class: "I
came away filled with ideas, techniques, and inspiration that has taken
on a rather brazen quality - cajoling me to compress the "work" me to a
smaller and smaller space so I can devote more of my time to painting
and creative pursuits. So hurray for another great day!!"
Layering with Acrylic Textures Do
you want to charge up your paintings with a fresh expressiveness? In
this day long workshop you will learn how to slather on textural
materials, then let the flow of color acrylic paints lead you into some
surprising new creative territories. We'll be working with paint,
textures and collage, combined with meditation and written word to make
uniquely personal art expressions. When: November 15 Time: 10am-4:30pm Where: The Studio in the Orchard, North Sebastopol Cost: $80

Etymological Inspiration
BARAKA
In various languages and traditions it means blessing, spiritual gift,
or luck. How auspicious to have a president who carries this gift in
his name!
If
you want to see a mind blowing movie (Netflix has it) Baraka is one to
order. It takes you on an unbelievable journey around the planet and
leaves you breathless with images that defy imagination - or perhaps I
should say - stimulates it.

ARTrails Open Studios, October 10-11 and 17-18 . . .voted Sonoma County's Best Outdoor Art Event Plan
your route to visit the artists and their studios and make sure the
Cornelis studios are on it! This is the chance to enjoy the setting
for our art making, to collect art and learn something about our
processes and techniques. And our chance to meet you! Let us know if
you need a catalogue map to find us and to help plan that route.
Watercolor Artists of Sonoma County meeting, November 11: I'll be demonstrating fluid acrylic techniques on textured paper.

Art Play Technique
Try
playing with this. . .cut up some foil in abstract shapes, crinkle it a
bit, glue it onto your watercolor paper with gel medium, then paint the
medium over the top as well. When it's dry, paint your diluted fluid
acrylics over the top, letting the paint settle into the wrinkles.
This was a real hit with the Muse groups. You get the metallic finish
which is an exciting contrast to the rest of your painting. And you
can drop some sand or salt into the wet medium to get some more texture
as well.

Hot Blogs!
I
vote for Bob Cornelis' art blog, and not just
because he's my husband. He uses his latest painterly photography and
paintings as a springboard and poses questions about the art process
which tickle the brain and challenge you to respond with your own
thoughts and feelings about art.
Roz Wound Up is one of those sketching blogs that gets you ready to grab your book and race out the door. She shares everything from art equipment to unique ideas for capturing your subjects - especially the feathered sort (which are my favorites too).
|
That's it for now, except that you can visit me on my Art and Sketchbook blog every couple days for something new. Thanks for your visits and inspiring comments.
Hope to see you some time this fall - and with a brush or pen or musical instrument in hand!
Cheers,
Susan Cornelis
