MDG cross logoWhat is YOUR Congregation Doing With the MDGs?

We're now at the halfway point of the time frame set for acheiving the Millennium Development Goals, and it's time to see how we're doing. The UN report card is out, and it's time to gather information for our own -- and we need your help.

EGR has constructed an online survey to gather data from every congregation in the church on what they are doing to embrace God's mission of global reconciliation and the MDGs.

It's a short survey -- it shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes of your time -- but it will accomplish much for EGR and this movement. It's divided into six sections that give us information on how your congregation is engaging the MDGs through:

*Prayer & Worship

*Adovcacy

*Education

*Giving

*Connecting/Building Relationship

The sixth section is informational questions about you and your congregation that will allow us to keep track of whose data we have gathered, and sort by diocese and other factors.

The survey also contains opportunities to request information be sent to you about things like MDG educational curricula and how to hold a U2charist. There are also opportunities for you to share more in-depth about creative ideas your congregation has had for embracing the MDGs, mission trips -- anything that can be shared with the wider church to help other congregations in answering God's call to mission.

The only personal information we ask is your name and email so we can contact you with any information you have requested or to get more information if something you share is worth sharing with the greater church in more detail. EGR does not share this personal information with anyone.

The more congregations that take the survey, the better our data will be, the more accurate a picture we'll get of how the church is doing, and the more stories, ideas and resources we'll have to share with the rest of the church.

Here's what you can do:

2. Cut and paste this URL http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=ky1DycqqjAkPULvty3sK1g_3d_3d into an email and send it to as many different people as you can, asking them to take the survey for their congregation.

3. Watch for EGR updates and see the picture come into focus.

Got any questions about the survey or anything else about EGR, just email us!
What One Congregation Can Do
One ChurchSt. James Episcopal Church in Potomac, MD has put the MDGs front and center of their mission life. Ann Finch shares details.

July 1 was our MDG Sunday at St. James. Attendance at all three services totalled about 180, including children. On the 40 commitment forms received, members of our congregation report:

. 18 folks committed to 0.7% giving, 13 more intend to move toward 0.7% giving
. 4 have joined
ONE Episcopalian
. 6 have joined the ONE Campaign
. 29 have committed themselves to prayer in support of the MDGs
. 12 are volunteering time to MDG-related organizations
. 22 are committed to telling others

Those who entered dollar amounts reported donations totalling $23,929/year going to more than two dozen organizations. Funds collected at our MDG services on July 1 totalled $1,330 for Episcopal Relief and Development (including undesignated donations and cash); $840 for GAVI Alliance; $100 for CARE; and $50 for Heifer International.

Previously, St. James took the unique approach of studying the MDGs through the lens of one country - Namibia - where they already support and orphanage.

What One Can Do - Action Alert: The Global Poverty Act (H.R. 1302)
US House
Our friend Katie Andrews at the ONE Campaign shares this urgent action alert -- please call TODAY!
Call the Congressional Switchboard (202-224-3121 ) and ask your Representative in the House to co-sponsor the Global Poverty Act (H.R. 1302).  Not sure who your representative is?  Enter your zipcode at the top of www.house.gov and you can find out.  The bestday to call is TODAY - that's when your anti-poverty colleagues are all calling from around the country - but a call any day of the week is better than no call at all!  If you want to check the co-sponsor list before you call, click here.  If your representative's name is listed - make your call a "thank you" call.

Some quick facts on the
Global Poverty Act:

·

Requires the President to develop a strategy within official U.S. foreign policy to promote the reduction of global poverty, the elimination of extreme global poverty, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal of cutting extreme global poverty in half by 2015

· Includes guidelines for what the strategy should encompass - from aid, trade, and debt relief, to working with the international community, businesses and NGOs, to ensuring environmental sustainability.

· Requires that the President's strategy include specific and measurable goals, efforts to be undertaken, benchmarks, and timetables and that the President to report back to Congress annually on progress made in the implementation of the global poverty strategy.

· Introduced on March 1 by Reps. Adam Smith (D-WA) and Spencer Bachus (R-AL).

Here's a sample script to use when you call

"Hi, my name is XXX, I'm a resident of TOWN, STATE, your constituent, and a supporter of the ONE Campaign to Make Poverty History.  I am calling to ask that the Congressman co-sponsor the Global Poverty Act ( H.R . 1302) which makes developing and implementing a strategic plan to reduce global poverty by addressing the Millennium Development Goals a priority in U.S. foreign policy."

For background information on the Millennium Development Goals go to the EGR website.Once you've made a call, Katie Andrews, field organizer for the ONE Campaign has asked that you let her know by a simple email that mentions your representatives name and if their office confirmed their commitment as a co-sponsor.

Thanks so much and remember that 2 minutes of your time can truly save lives and improve the quality of life of millions around the world.
