Commemorating 100 years since 'Abdu'l-Baha's visit to America

In 1912, Abdu'l-Baha, the son of the Founder of the Baha'i Faith and the leader of the Baha'i Faith at that time, traveled across America with an inspiring message of America's spiritual destiny: to lead the way toward world peace, advance women's rights, combat the evils of racism, and moderate extremes of wealth and poverty. Learn more about His visit at centenary.bahai.us.

'Abdu'l-Baha traveled to fifty U.S. and Canadian cities, gave 140 public presentations and addressed over 90,000 people, from leaders of government and industry to servants, the poor and homeless. On May 1, 1912, 'Abdu'l-Baha laid the cornerstone of the Baha'i House of Worship. (read a talk by 'Abdu'l-Baha at the Temple site)

Throughout 2012, American Baha'is will celebrate the journey of 'Abdu'l-Baha and His impact on America. The first of the national centenary events will take place on Saturday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m., in the historic Chicago Theatre and will be followed by a devotional program and archives display at the Baha'i House of Worship on Sunday, April 29 at 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are still available for these two free events. To register, please visit the Chicago and Wilmette centenary event pages.

Follow the centenary commemoration pages on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Further news on the refurbishment of the Northern Entrance

Construction continues with the Northern Entrance of the House of Worship.  The walkway will be completed in time for use during the Baha'i National Convention, April 26-28. Below is a photo where you can see some planting has been started. Although it is hoped that the approach will be completed in July, handicap access will not be available immediately.  The greatest obstacle remains the reconstruction of the north branch of the Chicago River and pump station, being undertaken by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) adjacent to our project.  We expect MWRD to release the portion of our driveway and parking lot sometime in 2013 when parking lot construction can be completed.  We hope that handicap access will be available at the latest by this time.

* Please note that there will not be wheelchair access to the House of Worship or the Welcome Center due to this construction project.
